Remember, your spine is how your body protects your central nervous system as your spinal cord connects your brain to all the organs, muscles and joints of the body. It is crucial to understand how spinal problems can cause pain, numbness and tingling in other parts of the body. Like a short in the wiring of your car can cause problems in other parts of your car. A short in your dash can cause a tail light not to work, just as a disc problem can cause arm or leg symptoms. Spinal health is critical to bodily functions and nervous system integrity. A disc problem in the neck typically causes shoulder blade, shoulder and arm pain/numbness. Lower back disc problems typically causes shoulder blade hip, leg or knee pain/numbness.

“Sciatic pain” What is it? What causes it? Why is it only on one side? How can a problem in my back cause pain/numbness to shoot down my leg? All good questions!
First, sciatica is pain in the distribution of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve going from your spine into the leg. “Sciatica” is NOT a diagnosis, it is a symtom. It always has an underlying cause.
Secondly, the most common cause of sciatic pain is a herniated disc in the low back. Torn cartilage/labrum in the hip, piriformis syndrome, facet joint degeneration/arthritis and tumors can all cause sciatic type distribution of pain.
The reason it typically is one sided is because when a lumbar disc herniates, it usually herniates to one side or the other and “pinches” the nerve on that side. When a nerve gets pinched, it usually causes pain to radiate away from the spine down the length of the nerve. Sometimes it can radiate to the foot. The leg pain/numbness can even be there without noticeable back pain. Sitting long periods of time and sleeping tend to aggravate the symptoms and make them worse. If it is left untreated, it can lead to muscle weakness in that leg and cause “foot drop” which is weakness in the muscles that lift the foot off the ground. If you have symptoms like these, or have questions, give us a call and we can get it checked out for you.

Just my take on “Chiropractic YouTube videos”. Understand that the goal of YouTube videos is to get people to watch them. The more people watch them, the more money the YouTubers make, thus the more “dramatic” the video, the more viewers watch them. YouTube is a great place to get information but it’s NOT representative of what to expect at your local chiropractor who is busy seeing patients rather than making dramatic YouTube videos. So many of my patients are asking me about these videos that I wanted to take the time to address the topic. YouTubers are exhibitionists by nature and want people to watch them, so please don’t base your opinions of chiropractic or chiropractors on what you see on YouTube. I guarantee nobody is taking time to watch the average chiropractic adjustment, it’s not really that exciting. I always say, “Judge me on my results, not on the flashiness”. If you have questions, give us a call.

Nerve root compression causes radiation of pain/numbness into the legs or arms depending on if it’s in your lower back or neck. Herniated discs usually cause one sided symptoms and can cause various symptoms including pain, numbness, deep aches, shoulder hip or knee pain. You can even have the radiating symptoms without spinal pain.
