Stimming = Communication💛

Many children and adults use stimming to regulate their bodies, express emotions, manage sensory input, or stay focused. It can look like hand flapping, rocking, spinning, humming, fidgeting, or repeating sounds or words.

Most of the time, stimming is helpful and important. It tells us a person may be excited, overwhelmed, anxious, happy, or trying to feel safe in their body. Instead of stopping it, we can get curious about what the child needs.

When we understand the why, we can support in ways that build trust, safety, and connection 🤝

If a stim is not harmful, it is often best to allow it or offer a safer alternative. Every child deserves tools that help them succeed in their world 🌈

Understanding leads to connection, and connection changes everything ✨

April is Autism Acceptance Month 🩵

All month we’re celebrating individuals with autism. But today, we're shining a spotlight on two incredible kids and the unique, beautiful ways they experience the world.

Barrett is 5 and described by his family as loving, funny, and determined. He lights up the room with his smile, his joyful sounds, and the way he hums songs from his favorite movies. He has an incredible memory and a level of intelligence that can easily be overlooked if you’re not paying attention. Right now, he’s all about animals, dinosaurs, and dragons. He has worked so hard to grow his communication and social skills, gaining more words and connection every day. His family shared that he has taught them patience and how much the small moments truly matter. To them, he is a loving boy who is no different than anyone else, and above all, resilient.

Nehemiah is 4 and brings so much love, joy, and humor into every space he’s in. His laughter, spontaneous joy, and expressive “stim faces” are the moments that make his family smile the most. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to carry joy, even through challenges. He loves movement, books, sensory play, and Bluey. His family shared that he has shown them what love and happiness can look like without needing words. In their eyes, he is perfect exactly as he is.

Autism acceptance is about more than awareness. It’s about seeing each child fully, valuing their strengths, honoring their differences, and celebrating who they are without trying to change them.

These children are not defined by a diagnosis. They are joyful, strong, resilient, and deeply loved 🤍

Strong feet build strong movement 👣✨

Orthotics can be a powerful tool to help children move, play, and participate more comfortably and confidently. By improving foot alignment and stability, they support the entire body from the ground up 💛

Orthotics may help with
👣 Better alignment through the legs and trunk
💪 Reduced fatigue and discomfort
🚶‍♀️ A more stable base for standing and walking
🎒 Greater participation in school and play

Every child is different, which is why orthotics are carefully selected to match individual needs and goals. If you have questions about whether orthotics could help your child, our team is here to support you 🤗

Vision therapy through occupational therapy focuses on how your child uses their eyes in everyday life, not just how clearly they can see 👓

OT can help children who have difficulties with visual perceptual skills, visual motor integration, and oculomotor control that may be affecting reading, writing, attention, coordination, and daily activities 📚

We look at functional vision, meaning how the eyes work together and how the brain processes what is seen. When these skills are not efficient, children may struggle with tasks at school, play, and home.

Areas we can address include eye movements for reading, smooth tracking of moving objects, eye teaming at near and far distances, and coordination between both eyes 👀

Signs a child may be struggling can include headaches or eye strain, blurry or double vision, losing their place while reading, letter reversals beyond age 7, messy handwriting, difficulty copying, or fatigue with close work.

Sessions include individualized assessment, targeted activities, and engaging exercises that build eye coordination and visual processing. Families also receive education and home strategies to support progress between visits 🧩

As visual skills improve, many children show better reading fluency, stronger handwriting, improved attention, less visual fatigue, and greater confidence with schoolwork and daily routines ✨

If you have concerns about your child’s visual skills, we are here to help support their success in school, play, and everyday life 🧡

🎶 Not throwing away our shot… at safety. 🎶

Eloping = when a child wanders, runs off, or leaves a space without notice or permission.

For many children with disabilities or developmental delays, this isn’t “being naughty”, it’s communication. Eloping often happens because of:
🔍 Curiosity and exploration
😰 Stress or overwhelm
🔊 Seeking or avoiding sensory input (lights, noise, crowds, etc.)

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone, and you didn’t cause it. 💛

Our therapy teams partner with families to find realistic, everyday strategies that improve safety while honoring your child’s needs.

And truly… we get it. Parenting a runner requires eyes in the back of your head and marathon-level stamina. 🏃‍♀️

If eloping is part of your story, we’re here to help you write a safer next verse. 🎭✨

Meet Taylor! 💛

Taylor is an occupational therapist who loves helping kids build confidence, independence, and skills for everyday life.

She especially enjoys working with neurodivergent children and teens and those with learning differences, and has specialized training in functional vision. Taylor is passionate about partnering with families as they work toward meaningful goals and is always learning new ways to support the children she serves.

Outside of the clinic, she enjoys puzzles, staying active, and spending time with her husband and two young boys.

April is Occupational Therapy Month 🧡

Today we are celebrating what makes occupational therapy so meaningful to our Step by Step team and the kids and families we serve 💛

Here’s what our OT practitioners had to say about why they love what they do:

Taylor (OTR): “I love OT because it gives me the opportunity to walk alongside kids and their families as we work toward improving quality of life, whatever that looks like for each child. OT is so special because we get to be creative problem solvers, cheerleaders, motivators, and collaborators. We find individualized and fun ways to help our kids become their healthiest, happiest selves out in the world.”

Amy (COTA): “I love pediatric OT because I get to play all day with the cutest kids. But truly, what makes me love this field is the chance to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Improving quality of life is at the heart of what we do. Watching a child reach a goal they’ve worked so hard for and seeing that pure joy on their face means everything to me. Being even a small part of that is so fulfilling.”

Mallory (OTR): “I love occupational therapy because it allows me to use both creativity and clinical reasoning every day. I really value the one on one time with clients and building strong, trusting relationships. It’s important to me to treat every individual with respect, compassion, and dignity, and OT gives me the opportunity to live that out while creating meaningful, lasting connections.”

Abi (COTA): “I love OT because I get to meet so many unique individuals and help them reach their potential. I love being part of their team and cheering them on. It’s such a joy to play, connect, and help children grow and succeed in their own way.”

April is Autism Acceptance Month 💙

Autistic individuals do not need to be fixed. They need to be understood, supported, and valued for who they are.

Acceptance means listening, learning, and making space for different ways of communicating, moving, thinking, and experiencing the world.

At Step by Step, our goal is to celebrate autistic individuals through accepting them for who they were created to be🌈

Different, not less ✨
