Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, NZ was special. While I wasn’t as fast as I hoped or trained to be, this year was about the process, the experience and the people with whom I got to share it all. As 2024 comes to a close, a lot of lessons were learned and I’m appreciative of that learning.

1. I love the process of training for endurance sports and, while it could look different over time, I’ll always be “training” in some form.

2. You never stop missing creatures (in my case Summit) that significantly impact your life. While grief changes, the missing goes on, yet the important ones show up in your memory all the time.

3. This one is reinforcement, but life is short and the next day or your state of health is never guaranteed. So many reminders this year to live purposefully, do all the adventures and spend time with the ones you love and the people who fill your cup.

4. Training is best done in the company of friends.

Especially grateful for my #1 - love you and appreciate you! ❤️❤️❤️

A year ago, I decided I was done racing triathlon. About 7 months later, I changed my mind. I’m glad I did! Looking forward to racing the 70.3 Ironman World Championship in Taupo, NZ this weekend! The process of getting back to fit has been downright joyful and I’m heading into this race excited for the course, the camaraderie and an opportunity to find my best out there! LFG!

This weekend was fun and I started to remember why I love triathlon again. It’s been a tough winter for many reasons and I’ve found myself feeling burned out and distant from my sport. While the nerdy sports nutrition side of things blossomed with my new job as a grad school professor, I felt myself moving further away from my own training. I do have a ways to go in terms of healing injuries (thanks and Dr. Anderson’s team for helping me), but the passion is back and I don’t feel guilty about it. As a sports dietitian, it helps me a lot to be competing and walking the walk so to speak- there’s learning and relatability there. While finding time to train is challenging with a toddler and a full-time job, I feel like it’s worth it because I am happier and a better version of myself. I always just assumed you have a big sports career and retire, but I find that I’m mostly drawn to the process, the social aspects, the active lifestyle and the striving for constant improvement. Finding the balance isn’t easy, nor is fitting it all in, but I’m determined to find a way to stay in this sport that I love and hopefully use it to be the Mom, professional and athlete I want to be.

Our hearts are in a million pieces, yet comforted by millions of happy memories. We used to joke that Summit knew each of us differently. I was love, Sander was fun, Jason was respect. To me, Summit was pure joy. She was our first big decision the fall after we got married, she paralleled Sander’s childhood, she was my running buddy, our Fruita adventurer, my night nursing companion, hell-she even went to grad school with me. She was my best, best friend. She outdid the yellow lab I had dreamed of getting since age 10 and will always be the GOAT. The Elliott household feels emptier tonight, but we’ll gladly take this hurt right now because the love was epic. Summit thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We will miss you so very much.

Off-season came earlier than expected this year. I am supposed to be racing Long Course Nationals in Daytona this weekend, but my body sent me a very clear message that it’s time to rest in the form of a hamstring strain and an out-of-blue back injury. I am sad that I wasn’t able to see what I could do in Florida and equally sad that I didn’t put together my best race this season. But, I am grateful for a tremendous amount of learning, many wonderful training moments with friends and the many people who helped me this season. 2023 has allowed me to better understand why I do triathlon and how I want to approach the sport going forward. As I look to 2024, I will take the lessons I have learned, apply them and try to become my best self in triathlon and beyond. Now for a glass of wine, time with (best husband ever) and Mare bear, and some skinning (as soon as this back is a little less angry). Posted this image from The Tour of New Zealand because it was my first race of the season and my favorite race of 2023.

Any day you have the ability to race is a good day. Though I underperformed in Finland, I learned a lot from the experience and had a ton of fun with really special friends (you know who you are ❤️). I am not sure if anyone else has ever felt emotionally tapped at a race start line, but that’s how it felt. I fought hard, tried to be relentlessly positive and did my best. There will be more races for sure and I’m grateful for the clarity I got after this one. I also had a ton of fun preparing for this with (who has helped my running so much) and could not be any more grateful for everything did to support me in my preparation and goals for this race (best husband on planet earth). Excited to move forward!
