I've been quite quiet on social media for a while and have not been able to take on new clients because of an influx of referrals and an upcoming anticipated leave, but I still want everyone to know, there are 24 hour resources out there no matter what. Reach out if you need it. No matter what is happening, there are trained professionals to help.

I had a client tell me that after the most profound loss they could have ever experienced happened to them, Megan Devine's () book It's OK That You're Not OK gave them the ability to feel like they could go on when it felt like everything was lost. I don't often have time to read client recommended books (even though I would love to), but it felt like a disservice NOT to look into Megan's book. I got it on and listened to it every chance I got. I have never read (heard) a more heartfelt, inspiring, empathetic book that validates the reader (listener) more. It changed my life and how I approach grief as a clinician. Needless to say, I pre-ordered Megan's workbook/follow-up and I cannot wait to dive into it. The takeaway: if you're grieving or even if you just want to be a more helpful friend, family member, clinician, etc to someone who is grieving, look into Megan's books. They're not an easy read, but they're irreplaceable.

from . Recently I've seen quite a few people struggling personally and professionally with feeling like it's okay to leave a relationship, friendship, or situationship that is not good for them or their well-being. This really spoke to me because of that. I think one of the biggest takeaways from when a person decides to get away from something that isn't healthy for them, is that it's not always linear and it's not always easy, but sometimes it's good for your well-being. It may not mean that you hate the person or wish anything negative on them, but it means that you have to take care of yourself. It's okay to understand that emotions are complex and that you can still miss someone or wish them well, but you can also separate yourself from them for your own well-being and for your own self preservation. Sometimes understanding the complexities of these emotions is an important part of therapy. If you're struggling with this make sure that you reach out. There are people out there who can help sort through those complex emotions with you.

"An insight that makes you invincible." This. It sums up a lot of the therapeutic process; understanding that a lot of what you have learned or feel may not be true, having that outlined, the feelings from it validated, and knowing where to go from there & how to grow your light outside of that toxic environment. It can be done and you deserve it.

Hey all👋, it's me! I know it's been a while. I've been busy, busy, but I'm still here & dropping by to let you know I have some openings for new clients for both in-person and teletherapy (phone or video). Looking for a therapist? Give me a call or send me an email for a FREE phone consultation.

In the meantime, with the cold weather and holidays coming up, I wanted to leave this little pearl of advice from Namaste Cafe and Teddy Roosevelt. Things are TOUGH for a lot of people, burnout is real, decision fatigue is real, and things may seem looming, but don't forget to talk to yourself, coach yourself, remind yourself what you have control over & most of all, be kind to yourself. You've got this!

This. This. This. This. . Read it again and again. People being in pain is uncomfortable for others to see, but it's even more uncomfortable for the person who is in pain to feel invalidated or glossed over even if this isn't someone's intentions. So many people are grieving so much right now. How do we help in the face of so much pain and grief without invalidating? Hold space, be there, hear the person, do not rush them through their pain, do not explain it away or offer words you think may be comforting or encouraging. Sit with them. Reflect. Try to understand the hurt even if you cannot understand the specific pain they are in. Do not be afraid to let them honor that pain.

Right now, on I'm listening to It's OK That You're Not OK by Megan Devine (). I could not recommend this book more whether you are grieving yourself, want to help someone grieving, or want to understand how to in the future. Read it, listen to it. Understand.

My happy place is in The Outer Banks. There is something so therapeutic and calming about the waves, wind, and sand. Its beaches are unlike other to me. Every year, we vacation in OBX and it's so important to my mental health. I look forward to the peacefulness it brings. Unfortunately, this year we had to postpone our trip because we were set to go in mid May. I know it might sound so silly because so there is so much worse happening during this pandemic, but this hit me hard and all at once, I could empathize even more with my clients who are struggling with losing their outlets, their positive coping, the things they are looking forward to. COVID-19 is hitting people's mental health HARD and in unexpected ways. The good news is, we're in this together and at least we can support each other! This is why I say, if you're struggling at all, please reach out. I'm offering phone and video sessions and I want to be able to help. Give me a call for a free phone consultation: 585-483-0544 or send me an email: patronuscounseling@gmail.com.
