🐯 Camp Tiger 2026: Free Special Needs Summer Camp! 🐯
Applications are officially open for Camp Tiger 2026! Hosted by the LSU Health Science Center, this incredible week is completely FREE of charge for children with physical and/or mental challenges.

We are specifically looking for campers who might not have the opportunity to attend other special needs camps. Our goal is to provide an unforgettable experience for as many children as our resources allow!

📍 Who Can Join?
Location: Open to families in the New Orleans, Northshore, Baton Rouge, and Lower Parish metropolitan areas.

Age: Children must be between 6–15 years old at the time of camp.

📅 2026 Dates
Monday, May 18th – Friday, May 22nd

This week’s Spotlight Summer Camp is a truly special place right here in our own backyard: Louisiana Lions Camp in Anacoco! 🦁✨

For over 60 years, this camp has been "Our Summer Place"—a safe, fun, and empowering environment for Louisiana youth with physical and mental challenges, diabetes, and other health conditions.

Here is what you need to know for the 2026 Season:

📅 2026 Schedule Highlights
May 31 – June 6: Camp Pelican (Pulmonary disorders/Asthma)

June 14 – June 20 & June 21 – 27: Mentally Challenged Youth Weeks

June 28 – July 4 & July 5 – 11: Physically Challenged Youth Weeks

July 12 – 18: Louisiana Lions Diabetes Camp (Ages 6–14)

July 19 – 25: LA Lions & Camp Challenge (Hematologic conditions/Cancer)

💡 Why We Love It
Cost: The camp is FREE for qualifying boys and girls in Louisiana!

Support: All campers are sponsored by their local Lions Clubs.

Activities: From swimming and crafts to building lifelong friendships, it’s all about what these kids can do.

☀️ Camp Sunshine! ☀️

Are you looking for an inclusive, high-energy, and supportive summer experience for your child or young adult? This week, we are highlighting BREC’s Camp Sunshine, a specially designed summer program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

At Camp Sunshine, every camper gets to shine! Our curriculum is packed with themed weeks, creative arts, and social opportunities that foster friendships and independence.

What to Expect:
🎨 Creative Fun: Arts, crafts, and music tailored to all abilities.
🏃‍♂️ Active Play: Recreational games, water activities, and inclusive sports.
🚌 Adventure: Exciting field trips and socialization with peers from other BREC camps.
🌟 Supportive Environment: A 1:5 staff-to-camper ratio to ensure everyone has a safe and meaningful experience.

2026 Season Details:

Who: Ages 8-11, 12-17, and 18+ (Sunshine Club).

When: Weekly sessions starting June 1 (7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.).

Where: Various locations including Nairn Drive Park and Saia Park.

Cost: $125 per session for EBR Parish residents ($150 for out-of-parish).

⚠️ Important Reminder: All new and returning campers must complete a mandatory assessment with our Adaptive staff before registration. Assessments are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at Nairn Drive Park through May 6!

Vinegar & Baking Soda Volcano + Magnet Magic

Get ready for some hands-on science! Today, we’re exploring chemical reactions and magnetism. You’ll see how ordinary household items can create amazing experiments.

Materials:

🌋 Baking soda (about 2–3 tablespoons)

🌋 Vinegar (½ cup)

🌋 A small cup or container

🌋 Food coloring (optional)

🌋 Tray or plate (to catch overflow)

Instructions:

🌋 Place your small cup on a tray or plate.

🌋 Add baking soda into the cup.

🌋 (Optional) Add a few drops of food coloring to make it colorful.

🌋 Slowly pour vinegar into the cup and watch the fizzy eruption!

Try experimenting with different amounts of vinegar or baking soda and see how the reaction changes.

⚗🔬Science Behind It:
The vinegar (acid) reacts with the baking soda (base) to produce carbon dioxide gas, which creates bubbles and fizz – just like a tiny volcano!
