From a proud resident’s sacalait catch to a great egret enjoying its own bluegill, Lake Griffin at St. James Place is full of moments that remind us how connected we are to nature. Even a tiny ruby-throated hummingbird nest tucked away nearby tells a story of quiet beauty and new beginnings.
Whether it’s fishing, birdwatching, or simply soaking in the peaceful views, life by the lake is always something special. Photos by John Hartgerink.

St. James Place residents experienced the wild beauty of Louisiana like never before. Our trip to McGee’s Swamp Tours gave us a true front-row seat to the heart of the Bayou, where every turn revealed something unforgettable. With Captain Skip leading the way, the swamp came alive - calling gators up close and sharing stories of the swamp.
We wrapped up the day at Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf, where incredible food and even better company made the perfect ending.
A true Louisiana day from start to finish - memorable, meaningful, and already on the list to do again.

On Good Friday, seventy-five members of the St. James Place community gathered in a moving expression of faith to remember the passion and death of Jesus through an ecumenical Stations of the Cross service.

The service began with fourteen lit candles surrounding a simple wooden cross, each flame marking a step along the way of Christ’s suffering. After each station, a member of the congregation came forward to extinguish a candle. With each diminishing light, the room grew quieter, drawing us more deeply into the solemn mystery of the day.

When all fourteen candles had been extinguished, we marked the Lord’s death by singing “Jesus, Remember Me,” our voices rising gently in prayer and remembrance.

This sacred time was led in collaboration by Tip Tipton, Presbyterian minister; Fr. Tony Russo, Roman Catholic priest; Mother Joan Weber, Episcopal priest; and Kevin Portz, our seminarian volunteer—a visible sign of unity in Christ across traditions. We are also grateful to Margaret Johnson for her gift of music, which carried and sustained our prayer.

As we reflect on the sorrow of Good Friday, we also look ahead with hope and joy. Easter reminds us that light overcomes darkness, love conquers death, and new life is always possible. From all of us at St. James Place, we wish you and your loved ones a blessed and joyful Easter season.

BATON ROUGE’S ONLY CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY WITH LIFE CARE

In the late 1970’s, a group of forward-thinking parishioners of St. James Episcopal Church in downtown Baton Rouge envisioned a full-service retirement community that would be the first choice for active, successful aging in the Gulf South region. St. James Place opened its doors in 1983 to become the first retirement community in the state of Louisiana.

We’re committed to providing a high-quality lifestyle and a lifetime of enrichment opportunities. St. James Place remains sponsored by St. James Episcopal Church and governed by a Board of Directors comprised of business leaders, Episcopal clergy, and community civic leaders. Situated on a beautiful stretch of 52-acres once known as the Duplantier Plantation, the community takes pride in providing the perfect setting to Live Life Well.

From engaging social activities to bucket list travel opportunities, you’ll have more time to pursue personal interests and enjoy an active lifestyle when you live stress-free and maintenance-free. There’s peace of mind in knowing there’s help available 24/7 and that a full continuum of care that includes Independent Living, Assisted Living, Nursing Care, and two distinct levels of Memory Care can meet your changing health care needs. At St. James Place, you’ll enjoy a lifestyle that focuses on choice and individuality in an atmosphere that encourages a more social, positive, and active way of life.

If you have any questions about the amenity-rich lifestyle at St. James Place, call us at 225-250-1850.
