For over 21 years, BOTOX® has been used to give people younger, smoother looking skin. In fact, BOTOX® treatments are the most commonly performed, minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in North America.
When injected, BOTOX® relaxes muscles, preventing skin from creasing and causing wrinkles. It is especially effective for ‘expression lines’, such as frown and surprise lines on the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes, and lines on the throat.
How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® treatments come in the form of purified protein, which is injected into the facial muscles.
Within a few hours, the protein attaches itself to the nerve endings and interrupts their transmission to the motor muscles.
Within 2-10 days, the nerve transmitters are blocked and the muscles surrounding the area of the botox injection cannot contract.
The dynamic motion of the muscle under the skin is what causes the wrinkle in the first place, so—when the muscle doesn’t contract—its movement underneath the skin will cease.
Approximately 3-10 days after the treatment, the skin above these muscles will become nice and smooth.
The effects of BOTOX® last about 3-4 months, varying from person to person.
Is BOTOX® safe?
The safety records of BOTOX® treatment are nearly unparalleled by nearly any other delivered medication on the market. By its very nature, BOTOX® is a temporary treatment. When the treatment effects are gone, they are gone completely.
Does BOTOX® hurt?
Even patients who cringe at the thought of a needle can rest easy; the needles used for BOTOX® injections are so tiny that they are scarcely noticeable. In sensitive areas, the only thing you are likely to feel is a small, very fleeting pinch.
