On Friday, April 25, Serve Louisiana learned it was one of thousands of AmeriCorps programs across the country to have its grant abruptly terminated by the AmeriCorps agency—at the direction of the Department of Government Efficiency. This sweeping action has jeopardized over 32,000 national service positions and upended critical community work in all 50 states.
Today, Serve Louisiana filed a federal lawsuit to block the sudden termination of our 2024–2025 AmeriCorps grant and to protect the rights of our 37 members, 18 partner organizations, and the communities they serve.
The decision to terminate our open and active grant was made without warning, consultation, or justification. It violates both the spirit and letter of AmeriCorps’ mission to support service and community building. It strips thousands of service members of the opportunity to complete their terms and destabilizes organizations providing essential services in education, housing, health, environmental protection, and more.
Serve Louisiana is seeking immediate injunctive relief to halt the termination, restore funding, and prevent further harm to our service members—many of whom now face the loss of income, education awards, housing, and health care.
We are taking this stand not only for our program but also for every community and corps member harmed by this reckless decision.
For every dollar invested in AmeriCorps, there is a $34 return in community value—proof that national service is not just effective, but efficient. These funds go directly into local organizations meeting real and pressing needs across the country. National service must be protected, strengthened, and upheld.
