We’re excited to share that our Physical and Occupational Therapy team recently participated in a Prosthetic and Orthotic Symposium through Hanger Clinic University!
This continuing education opportunity allowed our clinicians to learn from leading experts in:
🔹 Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) and lower extremity orthotic treatment
🔹 Clinical decision-making for upper limb prosthetics
🔹 Improving transfemoral amputee gait and addressing common gait deviations

Ongoing education is a priority at Sage Outpatient Services. Investing in advanced training ensures we continue providing evidence-based, multidisciplinary care to the individuals and families we serve.

This , we’re recognizing communication wins in speech therapy!
Today’s focus is on use of dysarthria strategies in real-world interactions. Our patients worked on:
🗣️ Using clear speech strategies during conversation
🎲 Explaining the rules of a game to another patient
👂 Monitoring listener understanding and repairing communication breakdowns

We practiced speech strategies such as:
✔️ Slowing rate of speech
✔️ Increasing breath support
✔️ Over-articulating key words
✔️ Using shorter phrases
✔️ Pausing between ideas
✔️ Making eye contact and checking for understanding

The real magic? ✨
Communication does not happen in isolation. Explaining a game and having a conversation with others requires organization, sequencing, clarity, and self-awareness. It’s functional, engaging, and socially meaningful. When a patient with dysarthria successfully teaches a peer how to play a game or tells a story that is understood, they’re not just practicing speech, they’re building confidence, independence, and connection.

Speech therapy is about more than sounds. It’s about:
💬 Being understood
🤝 Participating in conversations
🎉 Engaging socially
🧠 Using cognitive-communication skills
❤️ Feeling confident while communicating with others

Every strategy used in a structured activity prepares patients for:
• Talking with family and friends
• Ordering at a restaurant
• Participating in group activities
• Advocating for themselves

The bottom line- functional communication matters!!

🌟 Patient Spotlight🌟

We are thrilled to recognize Ms. Mary Silva’s awesome progress in therapy! Ms. Silva has transitioned from using a rollator to walking with a cane which is a huge milestone for her. She has been working hard on improving her balance in physical therapy and has not experienced a fall in months. Her back pain has significantly decreased, allowing her to walk to her neighborhood library and safely return home. She has even been able to get back to one of her favorite activities- gardening! 🌷🌼

Ms. Silva’s dedication, determination, consistency, and positive attitude are remarkable. It’s an honor to be part of her journey and to celebrate her. We are so proud of all she has accomplished. Congratulations, Ms. Silva!👏

Functional Friday was feeling extra sweet and full of love yesterday! 💕We celebrated Valentine’s Day early by getting hands-on in therapy. We made beautiful Valentine’s Day cards, refreshing pink lemonade, heart-shaped cookies, and colorful flower arrangements. These activities weren’t just festive- they were functional too! From practicing fine motor skills while decorating cookies and arranging flowers, to building independence in the kitchen and expressing our love through handmade cards, every moment was filled with purpose. Nothing is better than addressing these skills in fun and creative ways! Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you from Sage Outpatient! ❤️

🌟 Patient Spotlight: Nichelle’s Incredible Progress 🌟

When Nichelle Richard first started therapy, she required a Hoyer lift for transfers and was unable to sit unsupported. Her sitting balance was extremely limited, and daily activities felt out of reach.

Today, her progress tells an inspiring story of strength, determination, and teamwork. 💪

✨ Now Nichelle can:
• Perform slide board transfers to and from her bed
• Sit unsupported with improved balance
• Hold her grandchild independently
• Demonstrate significantly improved arm strength
• Sit comfortably in her recliner at home-- something she hadn’t done in years
• Travel and enjoy time outside her home again

These milestones may seem simple to some, but they represent life-changing independence and renewed confidence. Being able to sit in her own recliner and hold her grandchild are moments that truly matter. 💛

Nichelle’s dedication to both physical and occupational therapy has been incredible to witness. We are so proud of her hard work, and we are honored to be part of her journey toward greater independence. Congratulations, Nichelle!

We’re so excited to announce our newest speech therapist and team member to Sage Outpatient, Jacey Howard, MS, CFY-SLP! Jacey graduated from LSU in 2023 and continued her academic career at Southeastern Louisiana University, completing her degree in 2025. She has a special interest in treating aphasia, dysphagia, and cognitive-communication disorders, and is passionate about helping her patients regain confidence and independence. She loves working at Sage Outpatient because of the opportunity to truly connect with patients, hear their stories, and make a meaningful difference in their lives each day. Outside of work, Jacey enjoys traveling with her husband, staying active in her church community, and spending time with family. Fun fact: she has been playing the violin for 20 years! We are thrilled to have Jacey on the Sage team and look forward to all the great things she will accomplish! Please give her a warm welcome when you see her around the clinic.
