Austin Rattler 2025. 40 mile MTB Race in Texas Hill Country. 2nd place female.

This race was about coping and hope. Dealing with what I have now and hoping I can keep dreaming of a better world.

Life is presenting an abundant amount of change, uncertainty, and confusion right now. For me it is on multiple levels. I was with a group of friends recently and we were brainstorming coping strategies to get through these challenge points. Here are a few ways to take care of ourselves until we are ready to re-engage in the world.

1. Exercise and movement. You don't have to enter a race 😊. Moving the body processes emotions, can ease tension in muscles, gives the brain something else to focus on, and is one small accomplishment in your day.
2. Be EXTRA and exercise OUTSIDE. Get moving in nature. Gardening, walking , stretching on your patio, riding your bike in the neighborhood. Find a place that feels safe and visually appealing. "...Put yourself in the way of beauty..." (Cheryl Strayed)
3. Limit your exposure. I have offered this bit of advice to clients that tend to have anxiety about the state of the world. Listen or read the news 15 minutes in the morning and 15 and at night. Period.
4. Curate your social media. Start unfriending, resist click bait, take the apps off of your phone. Set a 15 minute daily time limit to scroll. As your eyes lift from screens you will feel your spirits lift.
5. Be with others that share your concerns. It lets us know we are not alone. Caveat: Don't grow each other's fears. Let it be a place to express not depress.
6. Dive into a new hobby, consider taking a class, volunteer somewhere. There is nothing wrong with good old distraction with the added benefit of making ourselves or something else better.
7. Look for hope everywhere. Giggling children, sunrises, random acts of kindness, hugs, delectable meals. Let these tiny sparks collect and re-ignite your own inner hope.
8. Control the controllables, YOU. Realize YOU can effect change. YOU can fight the good fight. You may have to be creative but the opportunities are there. And be prepared that s**t not happen the way you expect too.

I AM CASTING MY VOTE TODAY

I took some big risks this year and the result wasn't success. Currently I mill about the wreckage of a dream I hoped would take flight. All facets of my life are part of the carnage: career, family, love, and my Self. To keep myself going I maintain my work schedule, fill the gaps with busy work, journal, go to therapy and ride. Riding my bike brings me into the moment-brings me out of the mental gymnastics of ruminating and projecting.
In a moment of desperation, I entered into a bike race that has been terrifying to me. It is also the first race I have done in a long time completely alone. No friends, training buddies or loved ones. I had fun, felt pride in myself for many reasons, met myself with a congratulatory smile and a slap on the back at the finish line.
I was keenly aware of everyone as I made it back to my car. The families looking for their loved one to cross the finish line, partners acting as porters to support their racer, little ones pretending to shred like their racing parent, lovers riding bike to bike as they crossed they accomplished a goal together.
My current life situation is requiring me to examine how I am in relationship with myself. One question I asked my therapist is WHY? Being in the middle of all the beautiful human connection at the finish line of a race snapped it all in view. I can love myself, nurture myself, celebrate myself and WANT TO SHARE with others. We do the deep work to respectfully and honorably connect to other HUMANS. We can bear each other's burdens, witness each other's joy, support and encourage AND do the same for ourselves.
I spend most of my days talking to people that think differently than me. We may hold similar values but disagree on how to achieve them. We may hold different values but have the same intention on making the world a better place.
The next phase of government will effect many things, but it CANNOT effect our innate want and need to be in healthy relationship with ourselves and others.

I work with foam rolling and various SMFR daily with clients (and myself). Sometimes, it's a good idea to start at square one! Here is a primer on the basic tools and some best practices.

Overview of popular recovery tools and best uses for them.

Challenging races challenge your perceptions, ideals, and priorities. Reminders flood your being after the body and mind have achieved recovery.

There were no finisher medals when we crossed the line after 105 hours of racing. The prizes I have received since crossing the finish line are not trophies to be hung on my wall, but medals to be placed in my heart:

1. Most of what we acquire we do not need and often will burden us on our journey in life.
2. Don't let the world tell you what is important. Be still, listen to your breath, watch a sunrise. Notice the small things to connect you to the important things.
3. Filtering water from a cold running stream connects you to nature viscerally. Hands in the dirt and toes in the sand do the same thing.
4. Find a way to question what you tell yourself you are capable or incapable of. Be the author, editor, illustrator and publisher of your own story.
5. Everyone can do something better than you. You can do something better than someone else. Share. Learn. Grow. Give more compliments and fist bumps.
6. Never underestimate the power of kindness. I will always cherish the permission my teammates gave me to stop if I needed too. I will never forget their small sacrifices to support me. Sometimes you don't know when a small act of kindness changes someone's day or life. Seems like a good risk to take.

Me and my current best friend, a weighted backpack!

Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate so you have to create your own suffering. 5 x 1500-1600 m rows on the ski erg or rower and 5 x 8 minute intervals on the step mill WITH the weighted backpack. Good times.

I saw this at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, AR last year. This piece conveys much about females and WWII and beyond. She is truly a force physically. She is a beauty though not svelte and some would consider her physique masculine. I doubt her choices were her own and she did what she needed to do for herself and her family. Hopefully, she was able to share a few lunches and some laughs with other women in her situation. Or maybe she adopted stoicism as a way to deal with hard times. I wonder if there were nights where she cried herself to sleep and woke up to cry some more. Did she have to disperse her earnings amongst her loved ones leaving little for herself? I see her donning her uniform day after day warring against social contracts and weathering the daily minutia.

I salute WOMEN on International Women's Day today. The strongest among us don't appear strong. They endure situations that are not visible to others. They persevere and find the resilience to move forward. Often with a smile on their face and a kind word for others. They spend their energy lifting others up. No time for drama, gossip, or character destruction of any sort. They cry often, ask for hugs, and would move the earth for their people. High five your fellow Super Woman today! Let her know you have her back.
