Big news for the Capitol High Lions 🦁 and the whole North Baton Rouge community!

Today, we celebrated the opening of the Lion’s Den Food Pantry at Capitol High - a fully stocked space right on campus to help students and families access healthy, reliable food.

Made possible through generous support from the Charles Lamar Family Foundation and the Joe Burrow Foundation, and in partnership with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and LSU AgCenter, this pantry is more than shelves and snacks. It’s a step toward stronger focus in the classroom, less stress at home, and better health all around.

Dr. Desi Valentine never misses an opportunity to serve those in need. A native of Morgan City, she is a family medicine physician deeply committed to reducing health disparities through education, prevention, and compassionate care.

Staying close to home, Dr. Valentine completed medical school in New Orleans and went on to finish her residency at Baton Rouge General’s Family Medicine Residency Program where she now proudly serves as program director. Her dedication to training the next generation of physicians is matched only by her passion for improving community health.

Throughout her career, Dr. Valentine has played an active role in expanding access to care across the region. She helped launch a school-based clinic serving a local elementary school in partnership with Baton Rouge General, providing primary care while also supervising resident physicians. She also established a community advisory panel for the residency program, strengthening collaboration between BRG and the communities it serves.

Her outreach efforts extend across the city and beyond, from participating in health fairs and providing sports physicals for youth athletes to volunteering with local churches to promote family wellness and meaningful community connection. Dr. Valentine remains closely tied to her roots through ongoing charitable support within her hometown church in Morgan City, continuing to give back to the community that shaped her.

Black History Month is a time to honor the achievements, leadership, and lasting contributions of Black Americans who have helped shape our culture and community. This year, Baton Rouge General is proud to spotlight a few of our team members whose passion, dedication, and impact make a difference every day at BRG and beyond.

Annette Lakhdar has been a familiar and trusted face at BRG for more than 22 years. Her passion for patient care shines through her work as a lead medical assistant with Primary Care Group and at BRG’s Highland Road Express Care. A true people person, Annette goes beyond the walls of BRG, regularly serving the community, volunteering at local BRG health fairs and vaccination drives, and never missing the annual Baton Rouge Wellness Expo. Her commitment to supporting and improving the well-being of our community is felt by all who meet her.
