💆♀️ The Sternocleidomastoid (SCM): Where Tension and Emotion Meet 💆♂️
The SCM runs along the side of your neck — connecting your skull (mastoid) to your collarbone and sternum. It helps you turn, tilt, and stabilize your head.
When this muscle becomes tight or weak, it can do more than just cause neck pain. It can contribute to:
• Headaches and jaw pain
• Dizziness or feeling off-balance
• Shoulder and postural strain
The SCM contains peripheral receptors that help your brain understand your head’s position and balance. When the muscle becomes overactive, those signals can become distorted — leading to dizziness or disorientation.
With jaw tension, this muscle can even develop adhesions near the mastoid, where it anchors behind your ear — creating a deep, tender ache that often radiates into the jaw, temple, or head.
Emotionally, the SCM is known to hold resentment, anxiety, rumination, and suppressed emotions. When breathing is shallow or posture is off, it tightens even more — as if your body is bracing itself.
✨ Shallow breathing keeps the nervous system on high alert — feeding anxiety and tension. By releasing this muscle through massage, myofascial work, and mindful breath, the body can relax, the breath deepens, and balance returns — both physically and emotionally. ✨
Healing happens when the body feels safe enough to release what it’s been holding.
