This month, we created special reflection worksheets to help you look back on the lessons, challenges, and victories of this year, process emotions that surface during the holiday season, set intentions for how you want to enter the new year, and ground yourself during the darker, colder months.

Whether you complete them in one sitting or work through them slowly, these exercises are designed to nurture self-awareness and provide a sense of closure and clarity. Remember, reflection isn’t about judging where you’ve been, it’s about honoring your journey and preparing yourself for what’s next!

Research shows that self-care is the key to managing SAD. Its predictable pattern makes it easy to implement prevention strategies to manage symptoms. A few prevention strategies for winter-pattern SAD include:

- Going out for a daily walk to breathe in fresh air, get a change of scenery, and exercise.

- Schedule fun activities into your week and stay committed to your plans.

- Stimulate your mood by surrounding yourself with family and friends. Share your feelings and thoughts about your SAD experience and let your family know how they can support you through this time.

This week recognizes Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Awareness. It is a type of depression, so the symptoms look similar, and can include:

- Sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
- Feelings of hopelessness or guilt
- Fatigue and decreased energy
- Overeating
- Social withdrawal
- Thoughts of death or su***de

Because SAD has a seasonal pattern, it can be helpful to plan ahead as patterns are often predictable. To prepare for winter-pattern SAD, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) suggested the following:
- Seek therapy around September
- Plan a vacation to a warm spot in January
- Exercise more towards the end of Summer

There are many benefits to mindful grounding practices. Just to name a few:

- Reduces anxiety and panic
Grounding interrupts spiraling thoughts and helps bring your nervous system back into balance.

- Decreases dissociation
Grounding reconnects you with your surroundings and your physical self when you feel numb, detached, or zoned out.

- Promotes body awareness
Techniques like stretching, tapping, or deep breathing increase your connection to your body and its signals.

- Improves overall self-regulation
The more you use grounding, the more skilled you become at noticing and managing your emotions in real time.

In Podcast, Episode 32: Gratitude & Mental Health, Dr. spoke on the benefits that come with adopting a sense of gratitude in our lives.

This change can make a huge difference in our mental health including a decreased chance of depression and anxiety, increased sense of purpose, and more self-acceptance as we are able to appreciate things in life when we are in a place of happiness.

Today recognizes National Stress Awareness Day.

The truth? Stress isn’t always loud - It can show up subtly. Tension in your jaws or shoulders, feeling “wired but tired,” changes in your digestion, brain fog, avoidant behavior, and more. Body based grounding techniques can help with that.

These techniques are designed to work with the senses and body, making them ideal for people who feel overstimulated, anxious, or emotionally heavy during the holidays.
