Why Gratitude Works

Gratitude may seem simple, but research shows it can have powerful effects on mental health and well-being. Taking time to notice and name what we’re thankful for helps calm the mind, lower stress, and even reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. It also strengthens our relationships—people who regularly practice gratitude tend to feel more connected, empathetic, and supported.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) explains that gratitude can boost mood, improve relationships, and build resilience—simple habits that make a lasting difference for mental health.

Gratitude isn’t just a warm feeling—it’s a proven way to boost your mental health. When you pause to give thanks, your body responds: levels of stress hormones like cortisol drop, while serotonin—the brain’s “happiness chemical”—rises.

Over time, this simple practice helps improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and increase resilience. Here are a few simple tips to help you tap into the power of gratitude.

Fear doesn’t always look like panic—it can hide behind silence, smiles, or the pressure to keep pushing through. In sports, strength is often measured by speed or stamina, but true endurance begins in the mind.

Our new video, Our Toughest Opponent, explores the invisible battles athletes face—the anxiety, fear, and self-doubt that too often stay hidden beneath the surface. It takes real courage to speak up, to admit that something feels off, and to ask for help.

By breaking the silence and normalizing these conversations, we can help more people—athletes and non-athletes alike—find strength in vulnerability, balance in recovery, and hope in healing.
