The umbilical cord continues to provide oxygen-rich blood and essential nutrients to your baby even after birth. It’s a remarkable structure that contains three vessels: two arteries and one vein. The vein delivers oxygen and nutrients from the placenta to your baby, while the arteries carry waste away.

Because of this, many providers practice delayed cord clamping (waiting before clamping) to allow your baby to receive this final transfer of blood, supporting iron levels, circulation, and a smoother transition to life outside the womb. 🤱

This simple, evidence-based practice can have lasting benefits for your baby’s development. ✨

Why are birth center appointments longer?
At our birth center, prenatal visits are designed to give you time, education, and personalized care, not just a quick check-in.
🌿 We take time to talk about your physical health, nutrition, lifestyle, mental wellbeing, and birth goals
📚 Appointments include space to ask questions and learn about pregnancy, labor, birth options, and postpartum recovery so you feel confident and informed
🤝 Longer visits allow you to truly get to know your midwife, building trust and support throughout pregnancy.
Because pregnancy care shouldn’t feel rushed — it should feel supported, informed, and centered around you 💙

Doula vs. Midwife vs. OBGYN
🤱Doula
• Provides emotional, physical, and educational support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, usually remaining with the family throughout the birth.
• Non-medical role
👩‍⚕️Midwife
• Medical provider for low-risk pregnancy and birth, offering prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care in a variety of settings (home, hospital, and birth centers)
• Many midwives are CNMs, and also provide women’s wellness care, like annual exams, STD testing, birth control, and treatment for mild issues
• Known for their holistic approach
🩺OBGYN
• Physician and trained surgeon specializing in pregnancy and reproductive health
• Manages high-risk or complex conditions and performs procedures like C-sections and gynecologic surgery

Knowing the different roles can help you build the birth team that fits your family’s needs 💙
