Congratulations to our Spotlight Resident this month-Verna! She was born in Galveston, TX in 1937. When she was six, she moved from California to Michigan to live with her grandparents because her parents had TB. It was difficult losing her parents, she was raised with love and the blessing of close family; her cousins are like siblings.
Verna met the love of her life, Jim and they were married in 1965. They were blessed with 57 years of happy marriage before he passed. Verna says he was the best person she ever knew, and she still misses him terribly. They loved to travel over the United States via car, boat, plane, or train! They loved the journey as much as the destination.
Verna worked in accounting until she and Jim retired. For 25 years Verna was a member of the “Mermaids” and swam three days per week at Burnham Brook and then the Y Center.
Verna is grateful that her Grandma brought her into the Christian Science Church as a young girl. Her faith has been a cornerstone in her life, and she’s been active in the church since she was young. She still serves as Treasurer! Verna also volunteered at the Charitable Union, Food Pantry and helped to start our local Meals on Wheels Program.
Verna loves time with her family, lunch outings, reading, and conversations with the beloved friends she’s made at Lakeview. Verna also serves on the Lakeview Welcome and Care Committees.
