According to the American Urological Association, a quarter to a third of men and women in the United States suffer from urinary incontinence. The number is not more precise number because many people keep these symptoms secret due to feelings of embarrassment. That means roughly 33 million Americans suffer in silence with symptoms of urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is the leaking of urine that cannot be controlled. There are four different types of urinary incontinence.

Dr. Fahy was pleased to participate in Infirmary Health's Healthy Her | Women's Health Panel in Atmore.

Women from Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia counties enjoyed a fun social evening while learning more about important healthcare topics. The event featured a vendor fair where guests engaged with retail vendors as well as other healthcare services. The panel was moderated by WKRG's Akievia McFarland and included a wide range of providers who spoke on topics including hospital medicine, cancer risk and prevention, therapy services, family medicine, urogynecology, and mental health.

The latest post from Infirmary Health's Healthy Her blog series, "Healthy Her", helps answer the question about what pelvic organ prolapse is and how it can be treated.

Although pelvic organ prolapse is very common and up to 50% of women will have some type of prolapse during their lifetimes, this condition rarely gets discussed because women often feel shame or confusion about pelvic organ prolapse and are unaware of the treatment options.

“Corrective procedures are usually outpatient with quick recovery and rapid return to a normal way of life,” said Dr. Jeff Fahy, a board-certified gynecologist and pelvic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures for pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, benign pelvic masses, and pelvic pain.

It is important to remember to keep your mind and body healthy by taking time to unwind and enjoy your favorite activities. Some ways that can help you cope with stress include meditation, regular exercise, well-balanced meals, plenty of sleep and connecting with others. Take time each day to prioritize yourself!
