It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear colleague and friend, Derek Winebrenner, PA-C, just two weeks after retirement.
For 2 years, Derek provided exceptional orthopaedic care at our Urgent Care Walk In clinic. Patients knew him for his kindness, patience, and most of all his carefree laughter.
We are profoundly grateful for the time we shared and the lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, Derek’s family has requested that donations be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital.

Fellowship trained in Adult Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Pallitto specializes in hip and knee replacements and has expertise in both primary and secondary revision arthroplasty, robotics and the direct anterior approach.
Dr. Pallitto’s practice philosophy as a total joint surgeon is centered on restoring mobility, relieving pain, and helping patients return to the activities they enjoy. He believes every patient deserves an individualized treatment plan built on evidence-based medicine, advanced surgical techniques, and compassionate care. He emphasizes shared decision-making, taking the time to listen and ensure patients understand their options, both surgical and nonsurgical, so they feel empowered throughout their journey. The goal is not only to replace a joint, but to improve overall quality of life, function, and confidence in movement.
He is trained on both the MAKO SmartRobotics™ system and the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution for knee replacement. This advanced technology allows for highly personalized surgical planning and precise implant placement, resulting in improved alignment, reduced post-operative pain, and faster recovery times.
Dr. Pallitto joined BOSS from UPMC in Pittsburgh, where he practiced across several top-tier hospitals and contributed to orthopaedic research and education.
A New Jersey native and graduate of the College of Charleston, he earned his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, and pursued fellowship training in adult reconstruction at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He is an inductee of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and a member of the American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leaders program.
Dr. Pallitto is also an active contributor to orthopaedic research, with published work in several peer-reviewed journals on a wide range of topics, reflecting a commitment to advancing evidence-based practices and improving surgical outcomes for diverse patient populations. In his free time he enjoys exercising, fishing, golf, and spending time with his wife, Lindsey, and their two young children.

We are offering immediate care for a wide range of injuries and issues including joint pain, back pain, fractures, dislocations, torn ligaments, sprains and sports injuries. In addition, X-Ray, MRI and physical therapy are available on site.
Walk-ins are accepted at the clinic, which will be staffed by John Dana, PA-C, a board-certified Physician Assistant with extensive experience in orthopaedic urgent care.

BOSS Orthopaedics is pleased to welcome B. Andrew Castro, MD, MSc to our family of physicians. Dr. Castro is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedic spinal surgery.
Dr. Castro earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Bioengineering from Clemson University in Clemson, SC and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and went on to complete fellowship training in Complex Spinal Deformities at the University of Colorado.
During residency and fellowship training, Dr. Castro was very active in spinal biomechanics research. He has presented research at various national orthopaedic meetings, and has numerous publications including journal articles and book chapters to his credit. Dr. Castro was awarded the John H. Moe Award from the Scoliosis Research Society. He remains actively involved in Spinal Biomechanics research, and has designed and patented medical implants that are currently in use today.
Dr. Castro has extensive experience treating all disorders of the spine in both adults and children. Over the last 20 years he has developed one of the busiest spine practices in Denver, Colorado, and has been selected as one of Denver’s TOP DOCS. Dr. Castro is well-versed in and utilizes the latest surgical techniques including minimally invasive surgery and disc replacement. Dr. Castro typically exhausts non-surgical options prior to considering surgical intervention.
When not working, Dr. Castro enjoys fly fishing, boating, golf, and intermittently participating in IRONMAN events. His recent return to South Carolina was to be closer to family and friends.

BOSS Orthopaedics is pleased to welcome Daniel J. Del Gaizo, MD to our family of physicians. Dr. Del Gaizo is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction hip and knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Del Gaizo completed a prestigious fellowship in hip and knee replacement with the world renown joint replacement surgeons at Rush University in Chicago, IL. Dr. Del Gaizo was then recruited to serve as faculty, first as assistant professor, then as associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine Chapel Hill. After 8 years at UNC he was recruited to join Palmetto Health/The Moore Clinic in Columbia SC where he served for 2 years as Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The University of South Carolina School of Medicine. In his 10 years of clinical academic practice Dr. Del Gaizo has mentored dozens of physician trainees, served as principal investigator in many orthopaedic research trials, authored over 40 peer reviewed publications, and lectured at many regional and national meetings. He has incorporated the latest techniques and technology into his practice and successfully performed thousands of hip and knee replacement surgeries.
Dr. Del Gaizo’s clinical expertise includes all aspects of contemporary hip and knee replacement surgery including direct anterior hip replacement and robotic assisted surgery.

Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine was started in 1987 by Ralph Salzer, M.D. He relocated from New Orleans, Louisiana after receiving training at Tulane University. He arrived in Beaufort, South Carolina with the mission to employ concepts and skills he acquired and provide quality orthopaedic care to the people of the Lowcountry.
In solo practice at the time, Dr. Salzer spent endless hours helping the hospital develop the Surgical and Physical Therapy Services as well as Outreach Programs for the surrounding communities. Emphasis was on patient education, utilization of rehabilitation services and recognition of surgical indications with modern applications. This has always been the cornerstone of this practice.
As the practice naturally grew, the search began for well-trained, like-minded orthopaedic surgeons to share their talents and perspectives to enhance this exciting practice.
Mark Dean, M.D. joined Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine Center in 1995, a graduate of Vanderbilt University with Fellowship Training from the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vale, Colorado. Dr. Dean has worked tirelessly expanding the Sports Medicine dimension of the practice and is known nationally as an outstanding shoulder specialist. It was with the coming of Dr. Dean that the practice expanded to a full-time office in Hilton Head, South Carolina. This broadened the ability to reach many more active patients and help them with our special style of practice.
As the service area continued to grow in population and as demographics changed, it became apparent specialty spine services would be in demand. In the year 2000, Scott Strohmeyer, M.D. joined the practice. He is a graduate of Auburn University and South Alabama Medical School with Fellowship Training in spinal surgery from Louisiana State University. Philosophically, Dr. Strohmeyer was a perfect fit for the practice and he is a tremendous asset to the community in providing conscientious and superb spinal care in the most compassionate fashion. His adherence to proper surgical indications and his surgical skills are second to none.
In 2017, Emre Caglayan PA-C joined under Dr. Dean and quickly grew popularity with with both new and established patients to the practice.
The physicians at Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine recently welcomed both Carson Sanders, M.D. in 2018 and Douglas Scott, M.D. in 2019 to the medical practice. Together, all of the physicians at Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine cover a wide variety of medical care.
