Today is World Diabetes Day, a chance for us to educate our communities on diabetes and support those living with it.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body cannot use insulin properly to regulate blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body produces little to no insulin because the immune system attacks the cells that produce it. Type 2 diabetes, the most common type, occurs when the body produces insulin, but the cells do not respond well to it.

This year's focus for World Diabetes Day is "Diabetes and the Workplace," an effort to eliminate stigmas and discrimination in the workplace for those living with diabetes. To learn more about World Diabetes Day and how you can show your support, visit https://pulse.ly/yfdmcxowxr.

Our team recently sponsored an event with Lamar Institute of Technology's RN program and Garlyn Place to provide IDD individuals a chance to learn nursing/life skills with local nursing students on campus!

Each "uniter" was paired with a nursing student to go through the skills stations, which included hand washing, donning PPE, and wound care, among other things. We ended the day with a dance party and lunch in the campus cafeteria! It's always so fun getting to partner with local organizations to make a difference in our community!

November is Native American Heritage Month, also called American Indian Heritage Month. This special awareness month celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, and affiliated Island communities.

This month and every month, we celebrate the diversity of these cultures and pay tribute to their lasting footprint on American society.

Nicole and Erin from our Beaumont PDN and Therapy office recently joined their kids at the annual Adaptive Sports for Kids fishing tournament! The kids loved getting to attach bait, cast, and reel in fish in the beautiful weather. We love getting to support organizations in their missions to foster accessibility and inclusion.
