I love this enactment of the role of the pelvic organs and pelvic floor during vaginal birth! During birth prep for my patients I always tell them the same thing, “during vaginal birth your uterus pushes out the baby and your pelvic floor doesn’t need to be strong but instead get the heck out of the way!”. Pelvic floor PT during pregnancy can help you learn how to relax your pelvic floor so it is not a barrier to the baby exiting your body. Your pelvic floor muscles need to stretch and relax so that this is possible. Some people are naturally good at this and some need help. A pelvic floor muscle assessment prenatal can help you to know if this is something you can work on during pregnancy so that you have a better birthing experience. In the flip side, you do absolutely need to be strong during your pregnancy to support your body as it takes on the role of growing and carrying a baby. Pelvic floor therapy can also help you maintain a strong core and pelvic floor during pregnancy.
