Allergy season has arrived, and many are already dealing with its effects. According to Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Alain Kameni, the higher-than-usual levels are due to pollen exposure, with tree pollen being the biggest contributor.
Common symptoms include watery or itchy eyes, a runny nose, nasal congestion, postnasal drainage, and sneezing. Chills, fever, body aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and coughing with sputum can help distinguish a common cold from seasonal allergies.
For relief, Dr. Kameni recommends oral antihistamines like Zyrtec, Allegra, or Claritin, which are most effective when taken before symptoms begin. For those with more severe or persistent symptoms throughout the year, allergy shots may be an option, and a consultation with a physician is recommended.
