October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month! Our goal is to help raise awareness, educate, and support our friends and families that are affected by spina bifida.

According to the Spina Bifida Association, Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect (NTD) that occurs when a baby's neural tube fails to develop or close properly, usually occurring within the first 28 days of pregnancy.

Spina Bifida is one of the most common permanently disabling birth defects compatible with life. It can lead to a wide range of physical, cognitive, and social challenges. Approximately 166,000 individuals in the US have Spina Bifida.

Although there are different types of Spina Bifida, ranging in severity, many individuals can live full and active lives! Check out some of our friends living their best lives!

This past weekend we joined Rollin' with Nolan’s crew at the Beaumont Buddy Walk to help educate, advocate, and celebrate our friends for Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

The National Down Syndrome Society has provided us with some educational points that we have summarized here! Down Syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21 and affects people both physically and cognitively. Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition, occurring in about 1 in every 755 babies. It is estimated that 5,000 babies a year are born with Down Syndrome in the US. Cognitive effects of Down Syndrome can vary from mild to severe.

People with Down Syndrome are able to work all throughout the community, including office work, retail, theatre, and entrepreneurship. Our friends in the Down syndrome community have the best and most unique personalities. We love sharing their experiences and watching their growth as they strive for independence!
