In Loving Memory of Leroy Brooks Jr. A Legacy of Strength and Humility

Leroy Brooks Jr. 60 of Liberty, TX; on March 6, 2026, after a lifetime of lightning-fast cuts and bold moves, Leroy Jr. found his final rest, passing away peacefully in his sleep.

Services are Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Turkey Creek Baptist Church 1600 Wallisville Rd Liberty, TX. Visitation will begin at 10AM until Funeral 11AM. Interment will be in Wells Cemetery Liberty, TX.

Leroy Brooks Jr., a man defined by his quiet strength, athletic prowess, and devotion to his family, passed away leaving a legacy of commitment and humility. Born on January 22, 1966, in Liberty, Texas, to Leroy Brooks Sr. and Avery Faye Brooks, Leroy’s journey began with deep roots in loyalty and community. He was baptized at Turkey Creek Missionary Baptist Church and attended San Jacinto Elementary before his family relocated to Baytown, Texas.

A "Gander" Legend

It was in Baytown where Leroy’s natural athleticism took center stage. A proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School class of 1984, Leroy became a local football standout. Known for his "lightning cuts" and blazing speed, he was named to the 1983 All-District First Team and the Honorary Squad as an Offensive Running back.

Despite his "blistering" 200+ yard performances and game-changing touchdowns, Leroy remained famously humble. When praised for his success in District 23-5A, he famously shifted the spotlight, stating:

“I’m feeling good; I’m ready to play, but the credit goes to the guys up front.”

His words reflected the kind of man he was—one who valued teamwork, gave credit freely, and carried his accomplishments with quiet humility.

A Life of Craft and Character

Beyond the gridiron, Leroy was a man of few words but great focus. He turned his passion for auto mechanics into a lifelong career, spending years at Baytown Nissan Service center and over 25 dedicated years with the Zachry Group. His craftsmanship was best displayed in his prized accomplishment: rebuilding his old ‘74 Chevy Nova.

When he wasn’t under a hood or tinkering around the yard, he was cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, Leroy wasn’t just a fan; he was a faithful, diehard Dallas Cowboy through and through. In his world, there was only one team that mattered, and no other team whether they were winning or losing, Leroy stood his ground with the Silver and Blue. On game days, you knew exactly where he stood, making sure everyone knew that the Cowboys were the only team worth talking about.

Leroy was the heart of family gatherings and at home he was the undisputed "Chief Supervisor" of family functions. He had a unique way of "helping" with the barbecuing, fish frying and cleaning, usually by leaning back with a watchful eye and offering a steady stream of poking and joking commentary. He was the master of the "lighthearted jab," and if he wasn't teasing you about how to cook or how you were holding the broom, he wasn't doing his job. His humor was the heartbeat of the yard, and his presence ensured that even the hardest work felt like a party.

A Life Lived on His Own Terms

To his mother, Avery Faye, Leroy will forever be her "little baby boy." She remembers him as a spirited, "busy-body" child—a rambunctious daredevil who kept her on her toes and her heart full of cheer. Though he was a constant source of worry as she sought to protect him and keep him out of trouble, he grew into a charming man who never lost that mischievous spark or his ability to win over any room with cheerful banter.

To his father and namesake, Leroy Sr., he was a reflection of strength and grit. His dad remembers him as "fast and furious," a man who lived for the thrill of the chase—whether it was as a standout football star, a fearless motorcycle ride, or behind the wheel of a fast car. Leroy was, above all else, a fighter who insisted on living life entirely on his own terms until the very end.

Those Who Welcome Him

Welcoming Leroy Jr. into eternal rest are his paternal grandparents, Earnest and Ellen Brooks Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Jeffery and Luella Durham; his beloved aunt, Minnie Rhodes; and his uncles, Theodore Brooks, Robert Brooks Sr., Earnest Brooks Jr., Bill Ray Brooks, and Harold Brooks Sr.

Those Who Cherish His Memory

Leroy’s legacy lives on through his loving parents, Leroy Sr. and Avery Faye Brooks; his greatest blessing, daughter Miss Allegra Brooks; and his bonus son, Marcus James. He is also survived by his brother: Dexter Brooks and Niece: Mallorie Brooks; Godchildren: Myah Diaz and Loghan Brooks; Forever Friends: Cheryle Brooks, Karen Williams-Shipley and Kimberly Judge; Aunts: Bennie Lee Dugat, Lena Mae Gillis, Mary Ford, Mary Brooks; Linda Sue Brooks Uncles: Morris Brooks Sr., Larry Brooks Sr. (Audrey), Dwight Durham (Fran) and Ricky Durham and a host of beloved cousins, relatives, and lifelong friends

Leona McNeil 65 of Beaumont, TX; passed Feb. 12, 2026.

Services are Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Maxson Memorial COGIC 7920 N Major Dr, Beaumont, TX. Visitation will begin at 10AM until Funeral at 11AM. Interment will be in Kirby Cemetery Silsbee, TX.

On July 14, 1960, Leona Lewis was born to Pastor Elex Lewis and Osalene Lewis in Newton, Texas. She was raised and educated in Newton, where she progressed through her formative schooling and graduated in 1977. During her school years, she was actively involved in several student organizations, earned academic honors in UIL competition, and obtained her Nurse’s Aide certification.

Following graduation, she pursued further studies to become a nurse, later discovering her calling in respiratory therapy. She faithfully served in the medical field for nearly four decades as a dedicated respiratory therapist. Throughout her distinguished career, she worked at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Park Place Medical Center, Promise Specialty Hospital of Southeast Texas, PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital, and healthcare facilities in Liberty and Lufkin, Texas. Her work was more than a profession—it was a ministry of compassion, care, and excellence.

In 1990, she married the love of her life, Elder Ted McNeil. From their union came one son, Charles, who was the joy of her heart.

Beyond her professional life, Leona was a gifted artisan and creative spirit. She enjoyed crafting handmade soaps and lotions and had an eye for designing beautiful floral arrangements. However, her greatest creative passion was jewelry design. She devoted countless hours to creating intricate, hand-beaded pieces marked by precision, patience, and remarkable detail. Each piece reflected her love for elegance and excellence and stood as a testament to her quiet creativity.

Leona was a devoted and faithful member of Maxson Memorial Church of God in Christ for over 40 years. She deeply loved her church family and faithfully served on the Mothers Board, standing as a pillar of wisdom and spiritual strength within the ministry. She was a quiet prayer warrior and intercessor, faithfully lifting others before the Lord—a devotion often reflected in her personal journaling and written prayers.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her son, Charles (Ambria); her beloved grandsons, Josiah, Charles Jr., and Preston, with one grandson on the way; her brother, Pastor Ralph Lewis; her sisters, Faye Thomas and Verna Bell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Mother McNeil was a woman who defined quiet strength, keen intelligence, and a heart filled with love, fueled by the Holy Spirit. She lived a life well-lived committed to God, devoted to her family, and dedicated to serving her community with excellence and love.
