The Life and Legacy

Rev. Lloyd W. Austin, Jr.

Rev. Lloyd William Austin, Jr. was born on July 3, 1946, to the late Lloyd Austin Sr. and Queen Esther Lemell Austin in Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from Charlton Pollard High School in 1964 with four music scholarship offers to well-known colleges and universities such as Bishop College, Houston – Tillotson University, Tuskegee College and Florida A & M University. He gave credit for those offers to his band directors; the late Mr. Willie C. Sennette and the late Mr. Richard M. Mack. He chose a different route than higher education by opting to move to Los Angeles, California in the summer of 1964 – he joined various back up bands based in the area such as the Del-Reys, the Iron Horse, High Octane, The Soul Providers and The Majestics to name a few. These groups opened shows as well as served as backup singers who traveled with basic instruments.

After living several years in Los Angeles, he returned to Beaumont in 1979 joining the multi-talented Mr. Carl Stewart’s group, named “Stereo”. Five years later he received the call, which didn’t come via the telephone, to be in the Lord’s service. He accepted his calling under the direction of the late Reverend Joseph S. Barnes. He preached his first sermon at Universal Church of the Living God entitled “Much Sin, Much Sorrow, Much Service” (Luke 7:37-38). After Pastor Barnes went on to be with the Lord, he began studying with his new spiritual leader; Pastor Edison Colbert, Jr. at Paradise Baptist Church where he served on the ministerial staff, as well as an Adult Sunday School teacher. Approximately three years passed by before he was called back to Universal Church of the Living God to pastor in June of 1997. During this time, he also hosted a radio show at a local gospel radio station in Beaumont using the handle “The Levite of the Airways” for over three years.

While desiring more spiritual knowledge he enrolled in classes offered by Dr. John R. Adolph and the Interdenominational Theological Center (a Morehouse College program) for two years of study. He received a certificate in Theological Studies. His studies continued at The Lord’s Outreach School of Theology of Lake Charles, Louisiana under the teaching of Dr. Russell Benoit for four years – earning a Bachelor's and Master’s Degree in Theology. He also received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in the field of Missionary from the Lord’s Outreach School of Theology.

Pastor Austin used the knowledge he gathered throughout the years of studying theology as well as the wisdom given to him by God to feed the flock at Universal Church of the Living God, taking God’s people to higher heights. He pastored this church for twenty-eight years along with his loving wife of thirty-six years, Louisa “Cookie” Austin by his side. They were inspired and encouraged by their friends in the ministry, church parishioners, and family.

Pastor Austin was a very anointed, talented and amazing musician. His passion and love for Christ was felt through his voice and the playing of his saxophone. He wrote songs with Min. David Coleman for Universal COTLG church choir. He also recorded songs with local recording artist Valerie Jolivet, she quoted him as being one of the greatest saxophonists in the world. She also stated people are currently listening to him worldwide.

He was not only a great spiritual father and mentor, but he was also a wonderful friend, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a wonderful person and throughout his life he touched many lives with his love, wisdom, encouragement and music.
