Leroy Brooks Jr., a man defined by his quiet strength, athletic prowess, and devotion to his family, passed away leaving a legacy of commitment and humility. Born on January 22, 1966, in Liberty, Texas, to Leroy Brooks Sr. and Avery Faye Brooks, Leroy’s journey began with deep roots in loyalty and community. He was baptized at Turkey Creek Missionary Baptist Church and attended San Jacinto Elementary before his family relocated to Baytown, Texas.
A "Gander" Legend
It was in Baytown where Leroy’s natural athleticism took center stage. A proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School class of 1984, Leroy became a local football standout. Known for his "lightning cuts" and blazing speed, he was named to the 1983 All-District First Team and the Honorary Squad as an Offensive Running back.
Despite his "blistering" 200+ yard performances and game-changing touchdowns, Leroy remained famously humble. When praised for his success in District 23-5A, he famously shifted the spotlight, stating:
“I’m feeling good; I’m ready to play, but the credit goes to the guys up front.”
His words reflected the kind of man he was—one who valued teamwork, gave credit freely, and carried his accomplishments with quiet humility.
A Life of Craft and Character
Beyond the gridiron, Leroy was a man of few words but great focus. He turned his passion for auto mechanics into a lifelong career, spending years at Baytown Nissan Service center and over 25 dedicated years with the Zachry Group. His craftsmanship was best displayed in his prized accomplishment: rebuilding his old ‘74 Chevy Nova.
When he wasn’t under a hood or tinkering around the yard, he was cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, Leroy wasn’t just a fan; he was a faithful, diehard Dallas Cowboy through and through. In his world, there was only one team that mattered, and no other team whether they were winning or losing, Leroy stood his ground with the Silver and Blue. On game days, you knew exactly where he stood, making sure everyone knew that the Cowboys were the only team worth talking about.
Leroy was the heart of family gatherings and at home he was the undisputed "Chief Supervisor" of family functions. He had a unique way of "helping" with the barbecuing, fish frying and cleaning, usually by leaning back with a watchful eye and offering a steady stream of poking and joking commentary. He was the master of the "lighthearted jab," and if he wasn't teasing you about how to cook or how you were holding the broom, he wasn't doing his job. His humor was the heartbeat of the yard, and his presence ensured that even the hardest work felt like a party.
A Life Lived on His Own Terms
To his mother, Avery Faye, Leroy will forever be her "little baby boy." She remembers him as a spirited, "busy-body" child—a rambunctious daredevil who kept her on her toes and her heart full of cheer. Though he was a constant source of worry as she sought to protect him and keep him out of trouble, he grew into a charming man who never lost that mischievous spark or his ability to win over any room with cheerful banter.
To his father and namesake, Leroy Sr., he was a reflection of strength and grit. His dad remembers him as "fast and furious," a man who lived for the thrill of the chase—whether it was as a standout football star, a fearless motorcycle ride, or behind the wheel of a fast car. Leroy was, above all else, a fighter who insisted on living life entirely on his own terms until the very end.
