First celebrated in 1966, this African-American and pan-African week-long festival started on December 26 and highlights themes of history, values, family, community, and culture, drawing inspiration from traditional South Aftrican first-fruits celebrations. In fact, the word “kwanza” means “first” in Swahili. Happy Kwanzaa to all who celebrate!
