"To support people with disabilities to determine and direct their lives.β Amie's Community Care overarching goal is to assist people with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve true choice and control of the supports and resources available to them. This goal is grounded in the concept of self-determination; a concept built on the fundamental belief that if people gain control of their supports and resources, their lives will improve and costs will decrease. Working towards that aim, Amie's Community Care values: Freedom, Personal Authority, Support & Responsibility. π Happy Spooky Friday from our Attendant Care Managers, Rachel and Sarah! We hope you enjoy this beautiful fall weather and remember to make this weekend an accessible and fun one for everyone who wishes to participate in the seasonal excitement! π
π‘ Inclusion Tip: When hosting or planning any fall festivity for people with I/DD, proactively offer clear communication, a comfortable quiet space to retreat if needed, and ensure all walkways are clear and accessible. Also, remember to respect all forms of engagement, and do not require verbal participation (like saying "Trick-or-Treat!") if the person is non-speaking or shy.

Repost Oregon Health Authority
"We are encouraging people to take steps to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion as advisories predicting triple-digit temperatures go into effect this week.
Heat waves can seriously harm older people, those who live or work outdoors, have low incomes, are pregnant, are infants or children, or who have a chronic medical condition.
Check in regularly with family, friends and neighbors who are vulnerable to heat, especially if they live alone, older or don't have AC.
To find a cooling center, call 2-1-1 or visit 211info.org and search for "extreme heat cooling centers" to find a cooling center near you."
TriMet will not turn anyone away for lack of funds to ride the bus or the max to cooling centers. Many of your local libraries will be operating under extended hours to accommodate the community.

βΏοΈβ¨ 35 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)!
This civil rights law didnβt just protect access - it affirmed the right to choice. For many in the I/DD community, thatβs what stands out most.
Because of the ADA (1990) and the Olmstead ruling (1999), people have the right to live in the community - not institutions - and to choose who supports them. That means individuals can decide who provides their services and can discontinue those services at any time.
The ADA also helped pave the way for Medicaid to fund in-home care, Day Support Activities, and employment supports - so people can live, work, and thrive on their own terms.
And hereβs the truth: Disability will touch all of us at some point in our lives. These protections matter not just for some - but for everyone.
π² Swipe through to see how the ADA shaped real-world legal rights, court ruling outcomes, and why this work still matters today.

July is Disability Pride Month! See the post from The Arc Oregon to learn about the design and meaning of the Disability Pride Flag!
As we continue to celebrate Disability Pride Month.
Disability pride flag in 2019. The original βlightning boltβ design was not accessible to everyone, so she redesigned the flag in 2021. With help from others in the disability community, Magill created the flag we use today. Each color represents a different part of the community and the shared fight for disability rights. You can read more about Magillβs design here: https://www.ameridisability.com/heres-what-the-disability-pride-flag-represents/
