Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute

Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute cc-TDI's mission is to make all childhood cancers universally survivable regardless of diagnosis.

The Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute was created with one aim: to make childhood cancer universally survivable, regardless of diagnosis. For many forms of childhood cancer, we’ve seen little to no advancement in treatment options for over thirty years. To overcome this stalemate, cc-TDI is embarking upon a bold scientific course of discovery to create more effective clinical trials

for those childhood cancers that are most in need of treatments to save kids’ lives. Our research team is exploring and testing state-of-the-art treatment options for the most urgent issues facing children with cancer. By proving these methods in the laboratory, we can deliver smart, hope-filled discoveries to be prioritized in clinical trials for kids. Working in our own freestanding research institution allows us to act swiftly and nimbly to achieve results—bringing cost control, speed, purpose, and focus to translate effective treatments into the clinic. To get there, we perform basic science and translational research in our Innosphere lab at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Our mission is to translate scientific discovery into clinical trials by understanding and proving new disease-specific treatment options for children with cancer.

We're down to the final case ... this is a *lovely* vintage the proceeds of which 100% support childhood cancer research.

Our great thanks to Jeff Lewis at Alexana Winery and who made this fundraiser possible.

Podcast - new episode, "What it means to be a pediatric oncologist"

Dr Wendy Allen-Rhoades generously shares about her journey as a pediatric oncologist, efforts in making sure that pediatric oncology has a voice and footprint, keeping things simple with W***y Wonka analogies, and making sure that childhood cancer survivors are thriving, not just surviving. We also learn about her work in advocacy and opening up to the world through her blog, along with some insights into the science behind childhood cancer.

In honor of the children, teens and young adults with the "rare" form of rhabdomyosarcoma harboring a PAX7::FOXO1 cancer protein (PAX-7, that is!), we have created and are now sharing with the scientific community a specialized genetic strain for studying this cancer's origins and mechanisms of progression.

The very international collaborative team included Roger Askew and Jonathan Gauntlett (Australia); Katherine Brechun and Harald Kranz (Germany); Jess Tate and Shireen Elhabian (Univ of Utah); and the cc-TDI Team consisting of Ellen Wang, Cassie Badger and Gillian St John (interns) as well as Naren Bharathy, Nicholas Salters and Samuel Rasmussen.

We are grateful for funding by the Megan’s Mission Foundation, the Pax7::Foxo1 Mouse International Crowdfunding campaign, and a very generous anonymous donor..

Announcing --- Charity Conlin-Jennings, PhD Named The Maya Handler Postdoctoral Fellow at cc-TDI Live Auction Proceeds Fund Pediatric Cancer Research in Honor of Maya Handler

Vinings Gallery marked its 25th Anniversary in August 2025 with a three-day celebration in historic Roswell, bringing together acclaimed artists, collectors, and friends in support of a meaningful cause.

The highlight of the weekend was a one-hour live “paint off” featuring Thomas Arvid, Alexei Butirskiy, Michael Flohr, and Steven Quartly. Spirited bidding during the event raised enough to fully fund The Maya Handler Fellow at the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute (CC-TDI), a research position dedicated to advancing treatments for rare pediatric cancers.

In December 2025, Dr. Charles Keller, CEO of CC-TDI, announced the appointment of Charity Conlin-Jennings, PhD, as The Maya Handler Postdoctoral Fellow.

The fellowship honors Maya Handler, the late daughter of gallery owners Gary and Cindy Handler, whose courageous battle with pediatric cancer continues to inspire the gallery’s philanthropic mission. Dr. Keller attended the anniversary celebration to recognize Maya’s legacy and share the impact this fellowship will have on children’s cancer research.

“For childhood muscle cancer, the last national clinical trial with curative intent for relapsed patients ended in July 2013,” said Dr. Keller. “That twelve-year gap underscores the urgent need for new drug development. The Maya Handler Fellow will work in our lab, in partnership with a major pharmaceutical company, to develop a new class of drug—called a protein degrader—specifically for children, adolescents, and young adults facing the same challenges Maya did. For the Vinings Gallery community, art is the heart that makes hope tangible for families impacted by this disease.”

“Celebrating 25 years with so many friends, artists, and collectors was already a dream,” said Gary Handler. “To turn that joy into funding The Maya Handler Fellow makes the milestone even more meaningful. It’s a powerful reminder that art doesn’t just inspire—it can change lives. We look forward to following Dr. Conlin-Jennings’s important work.”

Meet our incredible past intern Ben, who is now achieving great things at the University of Pennsylvania!

"After two formative internships at cc-TDI, I'm now applying my skills from the lab to study Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of coursework, I'm currently in our universities Electric Racing and Jet Propulsion clubs, and hope to reenter lab research next summer. My time at cc-TDI strengthened my love for engineering not just through fun hands-on experience, but by reminding me of the human stories behind our work."

Thanks to supporters like you, we are able to raise awareness on childhood cancer and inspire future generations of passionate scientists and doctors. Hear from Molly Dicks, another summer 2023 intern, on how cc-TDI has helped her pursue research!

"Since my time at cc-TDI, I have been studying neuroscience and finance at Boston College. I am currently a sophomore and recently began working as a research assistant in the Cognitive Affective Neuroscience (CAN) Lab at BC. My work in the CAN Lab has allowed me to apply many of the skills I first developed at cc-TDI and has inspired me to continue pursuing research and a career in medicine."

Santa was at the lab! 🎅 It looks like Santa left his hat behind while stopping by our lab this evening to check on our scientists working tirelessly on behalf of the bravest kids out there. On Christmas Eve, we’re reminded that hope, generosity, and belief in miracles fuel everything we do. 🎁✨

Thank you to our supporters for making this work possible—we couldn’t do it without you! 💛
