Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, aims to restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. This could be due to age, injury, or illness.
They are the “Specialty Care Provider for Aches and Pains.” Treatments include joint and trigger point injections, osteopathic spinal and joint manipulation as part of nonsurgical management of various spine, musculoskeletal, and neurologic disorders.
Physicians that specialize in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation are called physiatrists (fizz-e-at-trists).
Our physicians provided specialized nonsurgical treatments including osteopathic spinal and joint manipulation and/or injection therapies for treatment of multiple musculoskeletal and neurologic disorders.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation began in the 1930’s to address difficult muscular, bone, and neurological problems during World War II, when many soldiers returned from the war with serious disabilities, as well as helping polio survivors. In 1947 the Advisory Board of Medical Specialties approved PM&R as a specialty of medicine.
