Help us build office space for more child and adolescent therapists!

Creative Coping opened its doors in April 2023 with the mission to provide top-quality, evidence-based, and accessible mental health services to our clients and the community beyond. As a small group practice, we have the collective vision that mental health matters, and the skills that are learned in therapy are life skills that can benefit everyone. We offer both in-person and telehealth sessions for children, adolescents and adults, and we offer flexible hours to accommodate after-school and working hours. We also accept insurance, and are in-network with many commercial health plans!

While the need for mental health support has always existed, following the COVID-19 Pandemic, mental health challenges and the demand for therapeutic support is at an all-time high, especially in children and young people. Since opening, Creative Coping has been experiencing this demand first-hand, and with your support, we hope to continue to grow so that we can respond and offer the care that is so desperately needed.

After 3 months of being open, we have already had to start a waitlist. In response, we have expanded our team, but not our space. With your help and a generous matching grant from the Biz-M-Power Crowd-granting program , our goal is to add two more offices to our space and bring more people through our doors.

Project Details
Creative Coping is located in an office suite in Bedford, MA. Our current space contains three therapy offices, and one large, under-utilized room that we would like to sub-divide. We have consulted with the building contractor, and have been given an estimate for the renovation, which would build additional walls to create two more therapy offices out of the existing space. With the addition of two more therapy offices, we will be able to hire at least two more full-time clinicians to help us meet the overwhelming demand for our services!

How You Can Help
We are asking for donations of any size to help us reach our crowdfunding goal. Here's the cool part: your donation will be matched and DOUBLED by a Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation Grant. This crowdfunding campaign is part of a grant program that supports small businesses in MA. If you help us raise $5,919 the grant will match the funds *times two* - providing us with a total of $17.757 which is the estimated cost of this renovation.

Help Save In-Person Therapy!
Since the pandemic began, more and more therapists have switched to virtual-only services. While this is certainly a convenient option for working adults, we have found that most kids and teens respond better to in-person therapy sessions. Our clinicians are trained to use games, toys, art materials, and movement to engage our young clients and to teach them about their feelings.

But in-person therapy requires office space - and we need more of it. Help us expand our impact by expanding our office space -- so we can do our best work and our young clients can receive the most benefit.

Thank you in advance for supporting our cause. Please share this link widely, and remember that all levels of giving help us reach our goal!

Are some emotions and feelings easier to identify than others? For some, the answer can be yes. It may be easy for someone to tell when they are feeling happy or sad, but identifying feelings like anger or excitement may be more difficult. The emotions that are difficult for some, may be easy for others and vice versa.

At Creative Coping Therapy, we love to use body mapping to help people identify where they feel certain emotions in their body. By identifying where you feel an emotion, it may be easier to pinpoint that you're feeling that way in the future. For example, anger may be difficult to identify when you're in the moment. Through mapping, someone may be able to identify that they feel angry in their feet because they stomp or in their face because they get red. In recognizing that those are flags for angry feelings, one may be able to identify that feeling more easily the next time it happens.

Below is an example of what Body Mapping can look like (The National Archives). This example shows many emotions, but this activity can be completed with just one as well.

Happy Friday, from Creative Coping Therapy! We hope you had a wonderful, rewarding week. What was the highlight? What was something that could have gone a bit better?

As we continue to think about mental health for the young people in our community, overwhelming feelings may rise up. In understanding youth experiences and diving deeper into what mental health looks like for these folks, podcasts may be a great place to start. Our owner and director, Alison, came across this wonderful podcast from NPR about mental health crises within the youth demographic. We urge you to give it a listen and tell us your thoughts!

It may feel as though summer just started, but Fall will be here before we know it. As the start of a new school year nears, those first day jitters can start to rise up again for our kiddos. What if my teacher isn't nice? What if I don't know anyone? What if I can't find my classroom? And the worries can go on. This feeling is totally normal for children, but it can be overwhelming.

A helpful story to read with your child in an effort to ease those anxieties would be, First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg. The story is about a girl named Sarah, who is very nervous for her first day of school. Her dad tries to get her out of bed and Sarah says she is not going. She is worried about starting her new school and not knowing anyone. As the story continues, Sarah drags her feet to school and is greeted by her new principal. With fun twists, this story is a great resource to remind children that their feelings of anxiety are normal and they they aren't alone in that feeling.

Reading this story before the first day of school, or multiple times leading up to the first day can be extremely beneficial!

Is it difficult for your child to see things from another person's perspective? Try this "Reverse Story-Telling" activity to help them think of things from another point of view.

Have your child pick out their favorite movie, book, tv show, etc. The one requirement is that there is a "hero" and a "villain." Have your child explain the story from the hero's perspective - the one that most children know and love. The twist at this point, is to challenge your child to think of the same exact story, but from the villain's perspective. Sure, we all think that the villain is bad, but what could the villain be feeling about all of this?

Let's take Syndrome from The Incredibles or Gaston from Beauty and the Beast for example. They both invade the heroes space and hurt their feelings, and that is why we don't love them. But from their perspective, they love Mr. Incredible and Belle and are feeling rejecting. They are persevering to build a relationship and keep getting pushed away. Maybe from this perspective, we can see Syndrome and Gaston as people, rather than villains.
