Underage Drinking in the United States — Fact Sheet (2024–2025)

Prevalence
Lifetime alcohol use (ages 12–20): 12.7 million (32.9%) reported ever having a drink in 2024.

Past‑year drinking: 10.4 million (27.0%) drank in the past year.

Past‑month drinking: 5.1 million (13.3%) drank in the past month.

Demographic Patterns
Higher lifetime drinking prevalence: White youth (36.3%) and multiracial youth (34.0%).

Lower prevalence: Asian youth (17.5%).

Gender: Females (34.4%) slightly exceed males (31.4%) in lifetime drinking.

High School Trends
Underage drinking and binge drinking among high school students have declined for decades.

9% of high school students reported binge drinking in the past month.

More high school girls drink and binge drink than boys.

College‑Age Trends
48% of college students reported no alcohol use in the past 30 days.

28% drank in the past 12 months.

Binge drinking among high school seniors is now less than 1 in 10.

Health & Safety Impact
~4,000 deaths annually among people under 21 from excessive alcohol use.

Risks include:

Motor vehicle crashes, drowning, falls

Violence, su***de, sexual assault

Slowed brain development and memory issues

Higher risk of alcohol use disorder later in life

Economic Impact
Underage drinking cost the U.S. $24 billion (2010 estimate).

Regional & State Differences
Highest underage drinking (past 30 days):

California: 196,000 users; 126,000 binge drinkers

Texas: 187,000 users; 103,000 binge drinkers

Lowest: Wyoming (2,000 users; 2,000 binge drinkers).

Regional: Southern states have the highest number of underage drinkers; Northeast the lowest.
