Today our community came together for one of the most meaningful traditions of the year, our Annual Veterans Day Ceremony here at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford. This event holds a special place in our hearts as we recognize the brave men and women who served our country, and the wives and families of veterans who stood steadfast beside them through every moment of sacrifice and service. ❤️💙

The turnout this year was absolutely incredible, we had record attendance, with so many family members, residents, and community guests joining us to pay tribute that we had to live stream the ceremony into our dining room to make sure everyone could be part of this moment of remembrance and pride. Seeing our community come together in such overwhelming support was truly moving.

The ceremony opened with touching remarks, words of reflection, and moments of silence to honor those who served and those we’ve lost. We listened, we remembered, and we celebrated the stories of courage that continue to inspire us every day. 🌟

After the ceremony, the celebration continued with a Red, White, and Blue Social Hour, a joyful afternoon filled with freshly popped popcorn, patriotic milkshakes, and live music that had everyone smiling, singing along, and sharing memories. The spirit of unity and gratitude filled the room, reminding us all how deeply connected we are by the freedoms our veterans fought to protect. 🎶🍿🥤

To our veterans, to the wives of veterans, and to the families who continue to carry the torch of love and resilience... thank you. Your courage, your service, and your stories shape the heart of our community. We are forever grateful. ❤️🤍💙

If you weren’t able to attend in person, please take a moment to watch the video below, it captures the emotion, pride, and love that made today so unforgettable.

At Colonial Courtyard at Bedford, we believe that community is more than just a word… it’s a promise to lift one another up, to share resources, and to work hand in hand to make Bedford County the best place to live, no matter your age.

Today, we were proud to present the Bedford Area Senior Center with a $500 donation to support their mission of providing social connection, wellness opportunities, and meaningful activities for local older adults. This contribution reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that seniors throughout our area have access to programs that promote friendship, purpose, and joy.

Our residents and team members know firsthand how important these connections are. Whether it’s a meal shared, a laugh exchanged, or a new skill learned, the Bedford Area Senior Center continues to be a vital gathering place where community truly comes to life. We’re honored to be part of that story.

Together, we’re building bridges between communities, creating opportunities for engagement, and celebrating the incredible older adults who inspire us every single day.

A heartfelt thank-you to the entire Bedford Area Senior Center Center team for the important work you do. We’re grateful for your partnership, your dedication, and your impact on the lives of so many. Here’s to continuing our shared mission of proving that Older People Are Cool and vital to the heart of Bedford County! 💪🧡

We now challenge other local businesses in the Bedford Community to make a donation to the Bedford Area Senior center and keep the kindness growing!!

Every single day at Colonial Courtyard, our caregivers show what it truly means to have a heart for others. They hold hands through difficult moments, share laughter during joyful ones, and bring comfort, dignity, and compassion to every resident they serve. 💜

To celebrate National Caregivers Month, we asked our caregivers one simple but powerful question:
👉 “Why do you care?”

Their answers were inspiring, and beautifully honest. Some said they care because they want every resident to feel loved like family. Others said it’s because they find purpose in making a difference every day. And some said it’s simply because they were born to care. 💕

This month, and every month, we honor the incredible hearts behind the care, the ones who show up early, stay late, and give their all to ensure our residents live with joy, respect, and comfort.

To all caregivers everywhere…. thank you for your kindness, your patience, your empathy, and your endless compassion. You are the reason “care” is at the heart of what we do. 🙌

In our LifeStories neighborhood, we know how important it is to keep moving and exploring the world around us. Fresh air, new sights, and the beauty of the season do wonders for the mind and spirit.

Yesterday, some of our residents embraced the crisp fall weather with a peaceful hike through the mountains at the beautiful Bedford Springs. Afterwards, we enjoyed a scenic drive through historic Bedford, sipping on crisp apple cider and soaking in every bit of the autumn beauty. 🍁🚗☕

These moments remind us that life is meant to be explored, no matter your age or memory! 💛

🥳 Last week’s snack attack was brought to you by none other than Sydney from Gentiva Hospice, who rolled in with her world-famous Trail Mix Bar! 🥨🍫

Our team turned into professional mixologists faster than you can say “M&M’s or raisins? Let’s just say, some of us went heavy on the chocolate side of the trail. 😅

Huge thanks to Sydney for keeping our snack game strong and our sugar levels even stronger! 💪😂

Colonial Courtyard at Bedford is proud to announce that Tonya Leighty, our community’s Resident Wellness Director, has been named the newest recipient of the “Caring for Those Who Care” Award, an honor that recognizes exceptional team members who consistently go above and beyond to uplift residents, families, and fellow team members through compassion, integrity, and excellence in care.

For Tonya, this recognition represents not only years of hard work, but a lifelong passion for helping others. Her journey with Colonial Courtyard began in 2010, when she joined the community as a Resident Service Specialist (RSS). Her caring heart and strong work ethic quickly set her apart. In 2011, she advanced through the Medication Administration program, taking on a full-time role passing medications on second shift, where she became known for her reliability, calm demeanor, and genuine connection with residents.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forever changed the world of healthcare, Tonya felt a renewed sense of purpose. “After COVID, I realized I wanted to do more,” she said. “I wanted to expand my knowledge and my ability to help others in meaningful ways.” While working full-time daylight hours, Tonya made the courageous decision to enroll in night classes to pursue her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification. Her determination paid off, she graduated #2 in her class with honors in 2024, a milestone that she describes as one of the proudest moments of her career.

In 2025, Tonya took the next step in her leadership journey by stepping into the role of Resident Wellness Director, overseeing resident care and leading the nursing team at Colonial Courtyard. In her leadership role, she has focused on strengthening communication between departments, mentoring newer team members, and fostering a sense of unity across all shifts.

“Tonya is the kind of leader who leads by example,” said Brandy, Executive Operations Officer at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford. “She shows up every day with compassion, professionalism, and a sense of humor that makes the people around her feel valued. She doesn’t just manage the wellness team, she inspires. Her journey from RSS to Wellness Director is proof that dedication and heart can take you anywhere.”

For Tonya, the residents are the heart of everything she does.

“No matter what kind of day I’m having, I can always go talk to a resident and instantly have a smile on my face,” she shared. “I love when they stop by to show me a picture of a great-grandbaby, a drawing they made, or an idea they have. It’s like spending time with my grandparents, it just feels like home.”

Colleagues say that Tonya’s kindness, patience, and deep empathy shine through in every interaction. She’s known for her open-door policy, her willingness to lend a hand, and her ability to make others feel seen and supported whether it’s a new caregiver learning the ropes or a resident needing a listening ear.

“What stands out most about Tonya is her heart,” Brandy added. “She genuinely cares about people. She’s not afraid to get her hands dirty, she’s not afraid to learn, and she always puts residents first. She embodies everything this award stands for.”

The Caring for Those Who Care Award is presented to individuals who exemplify Colonial Courtyard’s mission of enriching the lives of seniors through compassionate service, teamwork, and joy. Each recipient is chosen for their dedication to residents and for their positive impact on workplace culture.

Tonya’s journey from her first day as a young RSS, to a Nurse leading her peers is a testament to what passion, perseverance, and purpose can achieve. Her story is an inspiration to her coworkers and a reminder that caregiving is more than a profession, it’s a calling.

As Colonial Courtyard at Bedford continues its mission of creating a loving, home-like environment for older adults, Tonya stands as a shining example of the difference one person can make through kindness, education, and leadership.

🎃👻 It was a graveyard smash at our MONSTER MASH Halloween party today! 🍪🧛‍♀️ We fueled up on fresh cookies, apple cider, and a special spiked apple pie cider that had everyone doing the zombie shuffle a little faster! 😆

Then came the Mummy Challenge (wrapping skills: 10/10) and another game hosted by our LifeStages coordinator… or should we say Pinky the Clown where residents tried to… well… throw pumpkins into her pants. 🎯🎃💀 We’re still not totally sure what the official name of that game was, but we’re positive it’s going down in Colonial Courtyard history as one of the funniest things we’ve ever witnessed. 😂👏

Our National Candy Corn Day celebration was sweet chaos in the best way possible! Residents used candy corn pieces as bingo markers (and maybe ate a few mid-game 👀), sipped on candy corn orange cream soda, and crafted the funniest candy corn faces to hang on their doors. 🎨😂

Then came the grand finale, because let’s be honest, no candy corn party is complete until every resident eats an entire bowl of candy corn! 🟡🟠⚪ Sugar levels were high, spirits were higher, and the dance floor was poppin’! 🕺💃
