“Frozen Roads, Massive Machinery—Was This Crash Inevitable?”

A terrifying crash has brought traffic to a standstill after a truck hauling massive Tigercat logging machinery overturned on a snow-covered highway. The heavy equipment spilled across multiple lanes, instantly blocking the roadway and creating a dangerous scene amid slick winter conditions.

The violent rollover triggered severe congestion as vehicles were forced to stop with little warning. Emergency crews rushed in and are now working carefully around the wreckage, battling icy pavement and limited maneuvering space while trying to clear the scene.

Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area if possible. Expect extensive delays and hazardous driving conditions as responders continue their operations. This incident is a stark reminder of how quickly winter roads can turn deadly—extreme caution is essential.

A school bus carrying three children and a semi-truck crashed on U.S. Route 24 in Illinois, killing all passengers and both drivers, police said.

Here's a look at what we're thinking for additional snowfall overnight tonight and through the day on Sunday.

Models have uptrended slightly throughout the day today and overnight last night. While most folks will still only see minor accumulations, we have expanded, quite significantly, our area that might see 1-3 inches.

We've also introduced slightly higher totals for areas south of I-96, west of I-69, and for areas north and west of a Whitehall to Baldwin line. Within these regions, we may see 2 to as much as 5 inches, though totals will probably remain on the lower end of that range for most locations.

Near and south of Ludington, right along US-31, we could see totals in the 3-6 inch range, but again, we think final totals will probably be in the lower end of that range. But, based on 2 of our different computer models, we've opted to include this zone here.

Light-moderate snow is expected through this afternoon. Most areas will see 1-3 inches of accumulation, w/highest totals west of I 69 and along/north of US 30. Amts up to 4” are possible near Lake Michigan. Drive carefully as roads will be slick and possibly snow covered (esp. in areas that see more accumulation). Visibility will fall to less than 1 mile at times. Snow tapers off this afternoon, focusing near Lake MI this evening (20% chance). Little to no accum. expected this eve. Frigid tonight, with lows of 2-10 degrees. Wind chills will range from 0 to 10 below zero.

Use caution if you're traveling through northeast or east central Illinois, especially the Chicago area. If you must travel, please slow down, increase your following distance, and give yourself extra time to get to your destination. As always, please give our crews plenty of room to make the roadways safer for you.... don't crowd the plow!
