We've taken some time off over the last month from posting about Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, as there were rumors of changes to telehealth and remote prescribing (by our partners). Now we are back, and we are ready to take on more clients who want real relief from their Treatment Resistant Depression, their Anxiety, and Trauma. Here is an interesting article on Psychedelics and grief. As the article states early on, in most places, the psychedelics mentioned are illegal or heavily restricted. Grief, PTSD, and even end of life issues can be addressed with Ketamine Assisted Therapy, which is legal and relatively safe with trained providers. Interesting videos from Web MD regarding treatment resistant depression (TRD). Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an option for TRD, however, there are others such as TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) and ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy). Although we practice KAP and believe in its efficacy for TRD, we believe consumers should know of as many options as possible so that they can feel comfortable and informed with their decisions.

We agree that Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is best done with an experienced mental health clinician, and that collaboration with your existing providers helps tailor treatment to your specific needs. The article tends to warn against abuse from at home use of Ketamine through various online provider organizations. Though we admit, abuse can occur, we are more concerned about clients not being adequately supported during difficult experiences during dosing sessions, as well as helping clients achieve gains for as long as possible- and making real change. Integration therapy after dosing sessions is extremely important. This is the way we maximize your gains from the medicine, for a long as possible- and help you take charge of your growth. We schedule the integration for no more than 24-48 hours after your dosing session. We may use art supplies, journaling, and revisiting music from the dosing session playlist as we work together.
Integration can be done online, though our preference is always to have you in the office, as integration can be intense, and support is often warranted. Integration by a trained (and licensed) therapist experienced with psychedelic work is one of the main reasons people choose KAP over Ketamine infusions.

A good question has been asked lately. Do I need to stop my medications in order to participate in ketamine assisted psychotherapy?
The short answer is, probably not, but it depends on what you are taking. Lamictal is a medicine that can dampen the effects of Ketamine, and the prescribers will often talk to you about this medicine and what to expect. Ma*****na is another medicine that can limit the effects. Alcohol cannot be mixed with KAP, and its important to make sure that it isn't in your system the day of dosing. SSRI's work on different receptors in the brain, and are safe for KAP. We suggest you bring any questions to the prescriber when participating in the medical review. As always, we believe Ketamine is safe to use as prescribed in KAP.

Treatment-resistant depression is a type of depression that does not respond to the typical medications and therapies . This type of depression may require a more intensive approach to treatment such as exploring alternative treatments, deep psychotherapy, inpatient treatment, combinations of medications, etc.

It is estimated that at least 10-30 percent of people who suffer from depression may be considered to have treatment-resistant depression.

Ketamine assisted psychotherapy is a novel treatment for treatment resistant depression that utilizes ketamine as an adjunct to traditional psychotherapy. It is believed that ketamine helps to create an alternate mental state, allowing the individual to gain new perspectives on the problems they face while in the state of altered consciousness. This alternate mental state provides an opportunity to gain insight into the subconscious structures or patterns of thought that may be hindering the person's ability to recover from depression. Ketamine is thought to help to break up these patterns, creating a space in which new dialogue can emerge, leading to a shift in perspective that can improve the person's overall mood. Additionally, the effects of ketamine can help reduce symptoms of depression, such as anhedonia, low motivation, and impaired concentration.
