National Association for Children of Addiction

National Association for Children of Addiction Using our network of the most respected experts in the field, NACoA provides solutions to address these impacts effectively.

NACoA envisions a world in which no child who struggles because of family addiction will be left unsupported. NACoA gives those who touch children’s lives daily the training and tools needed to help them see the pain and confusion of struggling children and respond appropriately both systemically in their professions and personally with understanding hearts. In a word, our programs give a voice to impacted children who suffer in silence each day:
-Celebrating Families! ™, an evidence-based, trauma-informed, skill building program of 16 sessions serving the whole family: children ages birth-18, their parents & caregivers. Versions also available to support Hispanic & Native American families.
-Children's Program Kit, a comprehensive tool kit enabling implementation and ongoing managing of a complete children’s educational support program in schools, at treatment facilities, afterschool programs, weekend camps and summer day camps, or at religious institutions.
-The Clergy Education and Training Project®, developed in collaboration with major national faith organizations, it provides education and tools to help faith communities understand and address addiction and its devastating impact on families and children effectively.

Perhaps the best resolution for 2026 is to simply be present more and do less. The world looks different that way. For individuals growing up in families impacted by the disease of addiction, discovering that we don’t have to perform for anyone nor accomplish great things, that we are OK as is, may be the greatest gift we can give ourselves for the upcoming year.

For families impacted by substance use disorders, what we let go is as important as what we carry. The burden can be heavy, yet most have grown comfortable with the weight because it’s accumulated over many years. 2026 can be the year to ease the burden, put down the load from your childhood, and finally release years of shame and blame. 2026 can be the year to turn your attention away from the struggles over the years and finally focus on you. 2026 can be the year to reclaim your story.

For children of all ages impacted by the disease of addiction, spending time with the family during the holidays can bring about a great deal of activity, pain, anxiety, fear, and depression. We must remember that we can remove the mask that so many are taught to wear to pretend that everything is OK. We can be honest about what we need, how we feel, and what is needed to take care of ourselves. Surviving the holidays is enough. YOU are enough. Today is a good day to be present, feel how you feel, and respond in a way that is best for you.

Hope is the foundation for healing for children impacted by the disease of addiction. Hope can motivate someone to embrace gratitude who might otherwise give up. Hope can summon courage to reach out for help when struggling with fear and isolation. Hope can release shame and blame, helping children accept that a parent's addiction is not their fault. In the spirit of the season, NACoA extends hope to children of all ages and wishes everyone a safe and healthy holiday.

Because at times during the holidays families impacted by the disease of addiction can experience anxiety, depression, fear, and isolation, please remember these important resources are always available:
• 988 National Su***de and Crisis Lifeline (can call or text)
• SAMHSA's National Helpline: 1.800.662.HELP (4357) - for individuals/families facing mental &/or substance use disorders
• Al-Anon/Alateen - Al-anon.org: available to individuals impacted by someone else's drinking, with information and meeting schedules (electronic & phone meetings accessible during inclement weather).
•NACoA’s Family Support resources. https://nacoa.org/family-resources/

Most families look forward to the holiday traditions every year. These rituals can mean so much more when parents are struggling with SUDs. Caring adults who can help maintain them or carve out new ones give children a sense of belonging. They also foster a growing sense of themselves as a valued member of the family as they contribute to them in some way. In addition, the joy that families experience when sharing these rituals together can leave an “emotional residue” that children keep with them to cope during stressful times. Share this helpful guidance with other caring adults supporting kids and teens in these families during the holiday season.
