National Association for Children of Addiction

National Association for Children of Addiction Using our network of the most respected experts in the field, NACoA provides solutions to address these impacts effectively.

NACoA envisions a world in which no child who struggles because of family addiction will be left unsupported. NACoA gives those who touch children’s lives daily the training and tools needed to help them see the pain and confusion of struggling children and respond appropriately both systemically in their professions and personally with understanding hearts. In a word, our programs give a voice to impacted children who suffer in silence each day:
-Celebrating Families! ™, an evidence-based, trauma-informed, skill building program of 16 sessions serving the whole family: children ages birth-18, their parents & caregivers. Versions also available to support Hispanic & Native American families.
-Children's Program Kit, a comprehensive tool kit enabling implementation and ongoing managing of a complete children’s educational support program in schools, at treatment facilities, afterschool programs, weekend camps and summer day camps, or at religious institutions.
-The Clergy Education and Training Project®, developed in collaboration with major national faith organizations, it provides education and tools to help faith communities understand and address addiction and its devastating impact on families and children effectively.

Together, we can continue to be a beacon of hope for these kids & teens, letting them know they are not alone and helping them heal from the pain and shame they are experiencing. Many adults convince themselves that younger children aren't aware of challenges related to parental substance use. This simply isn't true, and these young ones deserve resources specifically designed for them. This is why NACoA worked with Sesame Street to create the Parental Addiction Initiative. Karli, a Muppet whose mother has struggled with the disease of addiction and sought treatment, supports kids in that special, Sesame Street way. Learn more about this initiative and the customized resources available to remind young children they are not alone and that help is available. https://sesameworkshop.org/topics/parental-addiction/

During COA Awareness Week, it is important to remember that we support children of all ages. So many children who do not receive the healing they deserved grow up continuing to carry the fear, isolation, and blame they struggled with as a child. Al-Anon can help. It is a welcoming safe space for support and fellowship, available in person, online, or by phone.

How Can Al-Anon Help Me? Our personal situations may be different, but we share as equals because of what we have in common: our lives have been affected by another person’s drinking. Al-Anon is a mutual support group. We can find understanding and support when we share our common experience with ...

When teens talk to other teens about their experiences with parental substance use, they discover they aren't the only ones. Listening to high school senior Graham Nye, teens can find validation for how they feel and realize they can do things differently and live in a healthier way. The three part video series Teen-to-Teen is just one of the resources waiting to support teenagers on NACoA's Just 4 Teens page. https://nacoa.org/families/just-4-teens/ -to-teen

NACoA is thrilled to announce during that the Grief Guidance for COAs is NOW AVAILABLE as part of the Children’s Program Kit. NACoA’s well-established instruction for children’s programs supporting children impacted by SUDs (COAs) now includes an additional module for this trauma-sensitive support for COAs who have lost their parents to substance use. While the loss of a parent is always a profound and life-altering event, the death of a parent due to the chronic illness of substance use disorder carries additional layers of complexity and pain, and deserves customized support that accounts for the stigma and shame often experienced by these families.
