Celebrating 13 Years of Healing and Recovery! 🎉
This month marks 13 years since Maryland Recovery was founded with one mission—to help individuals with substance use disorders rebuild their lives in a supportive, healthy way.
What started as a bold decision to integrate community support with addiction treatment has grown into a holistic, compassionate space for those seeking recovery. For over a decade, we’ve been dedicated to serving the underserved and providing real solutions for lasting sobriety.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month
Alcohol is one of the most commonly used—and often misunderstood—substances. This month, we raise awareness about the impact of alcohol use and remind everyone that help and hope are always available.
Fast Facts:
✔️ Alcohol misuse is linked to over 200 diseases and injuries
✔️ 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults is due to excessive alcohol use
✔️ Recovery is possible—and support is out there
Why It Matters:
Whether you’re evaluating your own relationship with alcohol or supporting someone you love, awareness is the first step toward healthier choices and healing.
💬 This month, let’s start the conversation. Drop a 💙 if you’re choosing health, hope, and healing.

April is National Stress Awareness Month.
Stress can be a major trigger in recovery.
This month is a reminder to pause, check in with yourself, and use the tools that support your healing - whether that’s talking to someone, getting outside, or taking a breath.
Small steps matter.

Mindfulness, meditation, and breathing exercises can be powerful tools in recovery. They help calm the mind, reduce stress, and create space between you and your cravings.
One technique we often talk about is urge surfing - learning to ride the wave of a craving instead of reacting to it. It rises, peaks, and eventually passes.
You don’t have to fight every feeling. Sometimes you just have to let it pass.

12-Step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), SMART Recovery, and more, can also be impactful as they provide a structured framework to begin overcoming the unhealthy habits and compulsive decision-making associated with substance use. This resource has existed since the 1930s for good reason – it is a clinically-proven method of managing the ongoing symptoms of a substance use disorder.

In case you missed it - coping with stress and cravings is a big part of recovery. Knowing what to expect (and how to handle it) can make all the difference.
Sometimes we work with the fire department to do exercises in trusting others. Firemen’s life blood is trusting your fellow fireman to guide you out of a fire. This is similar to how patients have to learn to trust a sponsor or staff while in treatment to guide them to a better life.
Shown in the picture here is a client in the fire gear blindfolded and on a training exercise, the fire instructor by his side.

Depression can be a real part of the recovery journey. Healing isn’t always linear, and difficult emotions don’t mean you’re failing. Understanding the connection between depression and recovery can help you navigate the path forward with support and hope.

Holistic Remedies for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Cravings
If you or a loved one has ever wondered if there are alternatives to traditional, medication-heavy drug rehabilitation, you are not alone. Holistic therapies – a wide range of techniques aimed at improving a person’s mind, body and soul – can help to improve the effectiveness of traditional treatment.
Integrating holistic remedies into an addiction rehabilitation program may also alleviate the need for medication during recovery. For those who desire to manage their symptoms without taking additional drugs, holistic therapies are a prime solution.
