Now the Inquiry of Yoga. Atha Yoga is the yoga of self awareness and self compassion. We use asana flows, as well as asanas held on their own.
What to expect in an Atha Yoga class:
We usually begin with a brief meditation, and then some breathwork (pranayama). The asana part of the practice is a slow warm up that slowly builds heat and loosens the body up for stretching and strengthening. Lots of options for easing up or intensifying the practice are offered. In teaching an "all level" class, I offer many variations for different skill levels. The focus of Atha Yoga is always on the present moment, so caring for one’s own body and being aware of one’s own experience are paramount. This practice is the opposite of “no pain, no gain.” It invites just the right amount of effort in becoming conscious moment to moment. I encourage even people who have never done yoga to try a class. Yoga changed my life; it has the potential to change yours, and the remarkable thing is this power is available to everyone. Students who are unsure of whether this class is appropriate should contact me at 207 323-4162 or garrett.vail@maine.edu with any questions.
