❗️RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT ❗️
Donald R. Coontz
Donald R. Coontz, 3rd born into a large and loving family on June 27th, 1939, child of the late Edna and Gene Coontz. He was raised taking care of his family farm with the help of all his siblings that include Billy Coontz (passed), Bobby McQuain (passed), Libby Weese, and Jimmy Coontz. Donnie and his siblings raised animals and tended to the field/garden, a lot of which he still speaks about and tells stories of his childhood farm on Talbott Road in Belington, WV.
On his family farm is where Don learned the challenges of hard work at a very young age. He continued this work ethic into his career as a lifelong mechanic with the IUOE Operating Engineers Union, Local 132. He was a member of this union for over 50 years and was known by many in his field as an expert.
Don married the love of his life, Garnet Coontz, in May of 1957, married for 62 years. Together through his line of work they traveled across the country, notably one of Dons favorite places to visit was Watertown, South Dakota. Don loved his motorhome and working on it along with his travel trailers and RVs. Don and his wife Garnet loved traveling and Don notes that besides Watertown, he enjoyed going anywhere Westward.
Don and Garnet proceeded to have three children. Daughter Misty Bennett and husband Jeff Bennett who resides in Buckhannon, WV. Son Kevin Coontz residing in Belington, WV. Sheila Harris and husband Kirk residing in Longview, TX. Don and Garnet have one grandson and two granddaughters. All of which he loves visits with regularly. Garnet passed away in September of 2019.
Don has a passion for yardwork and taking care of his lawn. Many people from his neighborhood admire his trees and perfectly cut grass. Many times, Don will joke with staff about our yard and is able to spot half an inch of overgrowth. On any nice day, Don was in the sun “working” on his yard. Don enjoyed and loved the company of his dogs. Fun fact- Don has had three female blonde cocker spaniels!
Don now enjoys his golden years with the staff at The Stonehaven Home, joking and telling stories. We love having Don and hearing all about his travels, puppies, and growing up on a farm. Don enjoys visits with his family, mealtimes and conversation with the other residents, and facetiming! ❤️
