Gratitude helps children develop perspective-taking skills while understanding that not everyone has the same opportunities or privileges. It fosters empathy, reduces entitlement, and helps kids feel more connected to their families and communities.

When it comes to raising grateful children, the most effective approach isn’t lecture - it’s modeling. Kids learn gratitude not from being told to “say thank you,” but from observing gratitude in action.

Children are not the only learners in parenting. Parents are learning too, and it is normal to make mistakes while trying new strategies or handling challenging situations.

Instead of being hard on yourself, approach parenting with curiosity and patience. Practice new techniques gradually, celebrate small wins, and remember that progress matters more than perfection.

By showing self-compassion, you reduce your stress and teach your child that it is okay to learn from mistakes. Parenting is a journey, and growth happens step by step.

In couples, many partners find themselves noticing what’s missing - such as attention, effort, or time - more than what’s being given. It can be easy to forget to show gratitude or to assume that your partner knows how much you appreciate them.

Feeling anxious is uncomfortable, but it does not have to control your life. You can learn to sit with anxiety, notice it, and take meaningful action anyway!

The goal is not to make anxiety disappear but to live according to your values even when it is present. Over time, anxiety loses its power when it no longer dictates your choices.

To get the most out of tools like gratitude prompts and lists, emotional engagement is key. Just listing good things can be beneficial, but connecting those thoughts to an emotion, or savoring the experience makes a much bigger impact.

Separation worries can feel overwhelming for kids with OCD. They might ask the same questions again and again, needing reassurance that they’ll be safe.

Instead of trying to make the fear disappear, focus on helping your child build confidence in handling uncertainty. Talk through what they can do if you get separated, remind them of the helpers around them, and practice calm, problem-solving steps together.

If your child’s worries are starting to take over daily life, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Support and guidance can make all the difference in helping them feel safe and capable.

We often think of gratitude as a fleeting moment - a polite “thank you” or a short list in a journal during the holiday season. But gratitude is far more than a seasonal sentiment. It’s a mindset, a practice, and, as research continues to show, a powerful tool for improving mental and emotional well-being.

At its core, gratitude helps us shift our attention from what’s missing to what’s meaningful. Whether practiced individually, within a relationship, or as a family, gratitude strengthens emotional resilience and nurtures satisfaction and perspective.

When we are grateful, we step away from the position that we should automatically get things or that we deserve them. Whether we deserve them or not, we make a choice to be thankful for them.

Children with OCD may be very distressed by the thought of a parent or other authority figure being “mad at them”. But, frustration and disappointment are regular parts of healthy relationships. It is important for children to learn to tolerate another person feeling upset. Differentiating between a temporary emotion and a constant state of acceptance and love is key.

Calmly explaining that emotions come and go while your care for them remains steady can reduce repeated questions and help them manage uncertainty around relationships.

Instead of trying to address every behavior at once, choose one specific skill, behavior, or time of day to focus on. Practice it consistently, observe the results, and adjust as needed. Once you and your child are comfortable, move on to the next skill.

By breaking challenges into manageable steps, both you and your child can experience success and build lasting habits. Progress happens gradually and patience is key to long-term growth.

OCD often convinces us that checking over and over is the responsible thing to do. The reality is that excessive checking is a sign your brain is stuck in a loop of doubt. True responsibility does not mean eliminating all uncertainty.

ERP helps you learn to trust your first actions, tolerate doubt, and move forward without getting caught in repetitive behaviors.

Over time, this practice strengthens confidence in yourself and shows that doubt does not equal danger.
