Today, 59 years ago Harris Health Settegast Health Center opened its doors. It was a true neighborhood operation, as staff went door-to-door telling residents about the new facility.
Settegast Health Center was the first step in Harris Health's creation of Ambulatory Care Services, then known as the Community Health Program, as the need for neighborhood clinics was obvious. In its first year, staff saw more than 10,000 patient visits.
Settegast's second location was an old church building located behind its current location. Today, in addition to providing primary care, Settegast offers specialty care, including optometry, podiatry and psychiatry, as well as on-site counseling, laboratory, nutrition and health education and pharmacy. The team, made up of 65 staff and 10 physicians from UTHealth see an average of 200 patients a day. During 2025, Settegast Health Center staff cared for 27,000 patients.
