RULER Skill 5: Regulating Emotions
In this video, we explore the final skill in the RULER emotional intelligence framework: Regulating Emotions.

Emotional regulation is the ability to manage our emotions in healthy and constructive ways. It does not mean ignoring or suppressing feelings—it means learning how to respond to emotions thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

Children often learn emotional regulation by observing the adults around them. When parents model healthy strategies for calming down, problem-solving, and managing stress, children begin to develop those same skills.

In this video you will learn:

• What emotional regulation really means
• Why children borrow regulation from the adults around them
• Simple strategies parents can use to help children calm big emotions
• Practical tools families can use to reset during overwhelming moments

RULER Skill 4: Expressing Emotions
In this video, we explore the fourth skill in the RULER emotional intelligence framework: Expressing Emotions.

Children naturally experience big emotions, but they often need guidance on how to express those emotions in healthy and appropriate ways. Learning to express emotions helps children communicate what they are feeling while also respecting the people around them.

Parents play a powerful role in modeling how emotions can be expressed safely, respectfully, and honestly. When children learn that all feelings are acceptable, but not all behaviors are, they begin to develop healthier ways to communicate and manage their emotions.

In this video you will learn:

• Why emotional expression is an important part of emotional intelligence
• How parents can model healthy emotional expression
• Ways to teach children that all feelings are valid, but behaviors have limits
• Simple strategies to help children communicate their emotions instead of acting them out

This video is part of a five-part series based on the RULER framework, developed by emotional intelligence researcher Marc Brackett.

RULER Skill 3: Labeling Emotions
In this video, we explore the third skill in the RULER emotional intelligence framework: Labeling Emotions.

Many children (and adults) only use a few basic words like happy, sad, or mad to describe their feelings. But the more specific we can be when naming emotions, the better we are able to understand and manage them.

Research shows that simply putting feelings into words can reduce emotional intensity. When children learn the language of emotions, they are less likely to act their feelings out and more likely to communicate them in healthy ways.

In this video you will learn:

• Why emotional vocabulary is important for children
• How naming emotions helps calm the brain
• Simple ways parents can expand their child’s emotional language
• How labeling emotions helps children communicate their needs

This video is part of a five-part series based on the RULER framework, developed by emotional intelligence researcher Marc Brackett.

Chamber Member Spotlight: Belle Fourche Counseling was established in 2017 with the hope to help meet the mental health needs in the Belle Fourche community. We value our opportunity to serve the people in the Northern Black Hills and surrounding areas. Each of our clinicians are trained in a strength based approach and work diligently to provide excellent client care. It is our hope that you meet someone in our office that will sit with you in the darkest moments and point you towards the light that lives inside of yourself.

Counseling offers many benefits, but also comes with some fear about what it will be like. In our office we strive to meet each client in a non-judgmental way, knowing that each person is unique and has circumstances that led them to where they currently are. We work to help clients create solutions, heal hurts and create joy and meaning in their lives.

RULER Skill 2: Understanding Emotions
In this video, we explore the second skill in the RULER emotional intelligence framework: Understanding Emotions.

After learning to recognize emotions, the next step is understanding why emotions happen. Emotions are not random — they are signals that something important is happening in our lives, often connected to our expectations, experiences, or unmet needs.

When parents help children understand the cause of their emotions, children begin to feel less confused by their feelings and more capable of managing them in healthy ways.

RULER Skill 1: Recognizing Emotions
Before we can manage emotions, we have to learn how to recognize them.

In this video, we begin the first skill in the RULER emotional intelligence framework: Recognizing emotions.

Many emotional outbursts in both children and adults happen because we miss the early warning signs of emotions building up. Learning to recognize emotions helps parents respond more calmly and teaches children to become more aware of their own feelings.

In this video you’ll learn:
• How emotions show up in the body, behavior, and facial expressions
• Why recognizing emotions early helps prevent meltdowns
• Simple ways parents can teach children emotional awareness
• How parents can notice their own emotional triggers before reacting
