On this last day of February, we want to say one more time how amazing it is that our Mary Rutan Volunteer Guild celebrated their 75th anniversary this month! From 1951 to now, our volunteers have made an immeasurable impact on not only Mary Rutan Health, but our community as a whole. Their service and dedication to helping others has spanned decades, and we are so thankful for each and every volunteer that has come through our doors. Happy 75 years to our Volunteer Guild!

Our Mary Rutan Heart & Vascular and Level II Catheterization Lab Team wants to share some heart health tips this month in recognition of American Heart Month!

Today's Tip: According to major medical groups, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Cancer Society, the Surgeon General's Office and the American Heart Association (AHA), smoking ci******es:

*Makes blood vessels tighten up, narrowing the pathway for blood headed toward your heart.
*Makes the heart beat faster and harder.
*Increases blood pressure.
*Reduces levels of HDL (high-density lipoproteins, or good cholesterol).
*Damages the inner lining of blood vessels' walls. This type of vessel damage is also believed to be the first step in the development of artery disease.
*Makes blood cells more likely to stick together and form clots that can block veins and arteries.
*Interferes with the ability of blood cells to carry oxygen, reducing oxygen supply to tissues throughout the body.
*Contributes to artery disease, which sets the stage for both heart attack and stroke.

If you smoke, talk to your doctor about getting help to quit. There are many treatments that can make quitting easier. And the payoff couldn't be better.

This American Heart Month, we want to highlight our Level II Mary Rutan Cardiac Catheterization Lab team!

During an emergency, such as a heart attack, the Cardiac Catheterization Lab team acts fast to fix blocked heart arteries. Every minute matters during a heart attack. The national standard from the time you enter the hospital to when the blocked artery is opened in the Cath lab is 90 minutes. Mary Rutan Health's average for this time in 2025 was 64.5 minutes. There are 3 team members along with a cardiologist on standby 24/7/365 to provide this lifesaving service to our community! Great job, team!

This February, we are honored to celebrate our Volunteer Guild and its 75th anniversary! Since February 5th, 1951, our Auxiliary Guild has been providing caring assistance to all that come through our doors at Mary Rutan Health. In honor of our volunteers and the Guild's continued service to our community, we want to shine the spotlight on some of our current volunteers!

Today, we want to spotlight Becky Meyer! Becky has been a volunteer here since 2008. Usually, she can be found at the front desk of Mary Rutan Hospital, or working at the Crawfis Imaging Center, where she helps patients get where they need to go during their appointments.

Her team members at the Crawfis Imaging Center commented, "We just adore our volunteers, including Becky!" Becky especially likes seeing her coworkers each day, as well as seeing all of the patients that come and go. She says some of her favorite memories being a volunteer are times when she sees people she hasn't seen for years when they visit Mary Rutan Health, and she loves when she gets to catch up with them.

Thank you so much, Becky!
We are so thankful for you and your caring heart and your dedication to helping others!

This Heart Health Month, our Cardiovascular services team wants you to know your heart attack risks!

For example, knowing if you have unhealthy cholesterol numbers is important! Did you know that if you're 20 or older, you need your cholesterol checked at least once every 5 years? High levels of blood cholesterol raise your heart attack risk and usually don't have symptoms.

Take our heart attack risk assessment here to check your current risk factors: https://www.maryrutan.org/health-library/story/4b8a2f17-372d-4f96-8e96-c37db4020caa/
