The USPS has issued four new Forever stamps honoring Harriet Powers, an African American folk artist and quilter. Born into slavery in Clarke County, Georgia, Powers was emancipated following the American Civil War; in the 1880s, her work began to gain national recognition and is today considered among the finest examples of nineteenth century Southern quilting. The issue highlights panels from one of her two surviving works, "The Pictorial Quilt," which now resides at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
