Winter can be especially challenging for people living with a physical disability, particularly when chronic pain, reduced mobility or temperature sensitivity are involved.

Here’s some useful tactics to try when it’s cold outside and the pain kicks in:

- Keep your body consistently warm: Cold temperatures can stiffen muscles and joints, slow circulation and trigger pain flares. Small, steady steps can make a big difference.
- Stay as physically active as possible: Movement is one of the most effective tools for managing chronic pain. Every little bit can make a big difference.
- Maintain a consistent pain management routine: Continue prescribed medications, topical treatments and physical therapy routines.
- Stay hydrated and eat anti-inflammatory foods: People often drink less water during the winter without realizing it—but dehydration can worsen muscle cramps and fatigue.

Also: consider talking with your doctor about pain that increases significantly in winter—sometimes a seasonal adjustment to treatment is helpful.

When living with a disability, healthcare is an ongoing aspect of life.

There are constant challenges with accessibility, affordability self-care capability and more. These can add up to prevent you from obtaining or receiving the healthcare you need, or even discourage you from seeking it in the first place.

Where it comes to getting approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), healthcare is critically important.
- Have you been seeing doctors and specialists for your condition?
- Have they accurately and completely documented your medical conditions and treatments?
- Have you kept a personal condition journal that helps track symptoms and impact?

If the answer is “no” to one or more of these, the medical evidence you need to get approved for SSDI may be lacking. Worse still, you may be missing out on needed healthcare.

Here are some ways to overcome healthcare accessibility and affordability obstacles:

- Find your community health centers and free clinics.
- Nonprofit hospitals have financial assistance which can reduce or forgive bills.
- Get a pharmacy discount card.
- Connect with paratransit for rides to and from your doctor visits.
- Work with a social worker or case manager (find them at hospitals, clinics, community agencies, etc.).

Your work history plays a central role in Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) eligibility.

Since SSDI is an earned benefit, the Social Security Administration bases eligibility in part on the number of work credits you have. These credits reflect your past employment and the contributions you made through payroll taxes.

Many individuals meet this requirement when they have worked for at least five of the past 10 years and paid F**A taxes during that period.
The exact number of credits needed can vary based on your age when your health condition becomes severe enough to limit your ability to work.

If you are unsure whether your work history meets SSDI requirements, Allsup can review your situation, explain how credits are calculated and help you understand your next steps with the application or appeal process.

If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) claim is denied, you don’t have to face the appeals process alone. Having experienced representation can significantly increase your chances of success.

An Allsup representative can help you understand when to appeal a denial that typically leads to a hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ). They will develop your claim further for the ALJ’s review, prepare you for the hearing and appear on your behalf.

According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, individuals with representation are nearly three times more likely to be awarded SSDI benefits than those without.

Our team has extensive experience helping individuals through the appeal process to increase their chances of success.

Understanding whether your health condition qualifies for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is an important part of moving forward when work is no longer possible.

If you live with a physical or mental health condition that limits your daily activities or prevents you from maintaining employment, you may meet the medical criteria used by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The SSA reviews how your condition affects your ability to function, including your mobility, cognitive abilities, endurance and capacity to complete work-related tasks. Conditions such as chronic pain, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, depression and anxiety can meet SSDI requirements when they limit your ability to work.

Allsup provides guidance so you understand how your condition fits within SSA rules and what evidence may be needed to support your claim. You do not have to manage your SSDI application alone.

Jim Allsup, founder and CEO of Allsup Employment Services (AES), joins lawmakers in supporting a new measure designed to increase hiring for people with disabilities.

U.S. Rep. French Hill’s Dec. 9 press release introduced the bipartisan Helping Individuals Rejoin Employment (HIRE) Act, which would add Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients as a category of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) and renew the employer tax credit for five more years.

This change gives U.S. employers a stronger incentive to hire workers with disabilities and expand opportunities for those interested in returning to work.

“When the Ticket to Work Program was created to help SSDI beneficiaries return to work and move toward financial independence, one critical element was overlooked—engaging employers,” said Jim Allsup. “The HIRE Act helps close that gap by bringing businesses into the process and encouraging them to hire former workers seeking a path back to self-sufficiency.”
