Many people think Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are the same, but they’re not, and they serve different purposes:

- SSDI: A federal insurance program based on your work history and the F**A taxes you’ve paid. It provides benefits to people with disabilities who have earned enough work credits over their lifetime.
- SSI: A needs-based program designed for individuals with limited income and resources. It provides financial assistance regardless of work history, focusing on helping those with the greatest financial need.

Understanding these differences is important when applying for benefits. Allsup can help you apply for SSDI or appeal if you’ve been denied.

If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) claim is denied, the process continues through several levels: initial denial, reconsideration, an administrative law judge (ALJ) hearing, Appeals Council review and federal court.

Success at the Appeals Council and Federal Court levels often means the case is remanded back to the judge for another hearing.

At any stage, if your claim is approved, the Social Security Administration (SSA) awards you SSDI benefits.

You may also receive back pay for the months your claim was pending, helping cover the time you should have been receiving benefits.

Having support throughout the appeals process can make a difference. Allsup helps you track your claim, represent your case and stay informed at each step.

If you live with a disability and applied for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), a denial can feel frustrating and discouraging, especially when you know your condition affects your ability to work.

Many SSDI claims are denied for reasons unrelated to whether your condition is serious.

Common issues include medical evidence gaps, insufficient work credits or incomplete forms.

In some cases, the Social Security Administration (SSA) may decide there is not enough documentation showing how your condition limits daily activities or your ability to work.

A denial does not mean you do not qualify. It often means the SSA needs clearer information to evaluate your SSDI eligibility criteria.
If your SSDI claim was denied, you are not alone. Denials are a lot more common than people realize.

Don’t give up! Allsup can help you with your appeal – even if you applied for SSDI benefits on your own.

Stay with us for Part 2 to learn what steps you can take next.

It began the way many exceptional American stories do – with a group of veterans.

United Spinal Association traces its beginnings back to 1946. A small collection of paralyzed veterans in New York City came together to fight for better services to help live independently, eventually creating the Paralyzed Veterans Association (PVA). PVA went national, and the Eastern chapter later became United Spinal Association.

This year is United Spinal Association’s 80th anniversary.

Today, United Spinal Association honors the memory of those veterans and the rights of 5.5 million wheelchair users today.

Allsup is proud to work with United Spinal Association to bring resources to people with disabilities who work for independence, stability and
success.

Happy Anniversary, United Spinal.

During Brain Injury Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize how symptoms like memory challenges, fatigue, slowed processing or difficulty concentrating can impact your ability to maintain consistent work.

Even when you’re motivated to keep working, these functional limitations can make it harder to meet job expectations over time.

In a recent press release, Steve Perrigo, vice president at Allsup, explains that when you apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), your diagnosis is only part of the picture.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates how your condition affects your day-to-day functioning, particularly your ability to perform consistent work activities. Medical evidence that clearly connects your symptoms to these work-related limitations can play a critical role in the outcome of your claim.

March 26 is World Purple Day, a time to recognize people living with epilepsy and the realities that come with managing a neurological condition over time.

If epilepsy affects your ability to work, plan your schedule or feel secure in the workplace, you are not alone. Many people with disabilities manage medical care, safety concerns and employment decisions at the same time. Those challenges can make long term stability feel uncertain, especially when work is not predictable.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) exists to support you when a medical condition limits your ability to maintain consistent employment. Understanding how epilepsy is evaluated by the Social Security Administration , what medical records carry the most weight and how work history is reviewed can help the process feel more manageable.

Allsup helps you understand how SSDI rules apply to your situation, so you can focus on your health and your future without trying to sort through the system on your own.

If you are living with epilepsy and wondering how disability benefits may fit into your plans, learning your options is an important first step.

Disability due to epilepsy can qualify your loved one for SSDI.

Living with a rare disorder can bring unique challenges, especially when your condition affects your ability to work.

You may already know that qualifying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) depends on more than a diagnosis. What matters most is how your condition limits your daily function and work capacity.

In our recent press release, “Allsup Shares Key SSDI Eligibility Considerations For Rare Disorders,” , we discuss:
- How the Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates rare disorders under SSDI rules.
- Why detailed medical documentation is critical when your condition is less common.
- What functional limitations the SSA reviews during a disability determination.

If you are living with a rare condition, you may feel that your situation is not well understood. This press release explains how SSDI eligibility is determined even when a disorder is uncommon, and how clear medical evidence can support your claim.
