The best way to chase a goal is to take it apart.

Break it down into pieces, smaller and smaller until they are just the right size to take on one after the other. We know from experience that taking on “the whole thing” won’t get it done because of the risk of becoming overwhelmed or discouraged.

If you have decided you want to return to work either after recovering from or with a disability, you’re in “big goal” territory and it’s time to take it apart – and look for that first step.

Step one? If you’re receiving SSDI, you have a benefit that will help you get back to work. It’s called Ticket To Work (TTW), from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Allsup Employment Services helps you use TTW to return to work while protecting your benefits during the transition. As an SSA-authorized Employment Network, we also provide vocational services to help you land the job.

When you work while receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), how much you earn matters. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) to decide whether your work activity affects your SSDI eligibility.

SGA is a monthly earnings amount that SSA sets each year (2026 amounts: $1,690 for non-blind individuals, or $2,830 for blind individuals).

During your Trial Work Period (TWP), you continue receiving your SSDI payment regardless of how much you earn. After the TWP is over and you enter into your 36-month Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE), if your earnings stay below that level for a given month, you still receive your

SSDI payment. If your earnings rise above SGA, you will not receive your SSDI payment.

Understanding how SSA measures earnings gives you more control over your work decisions. It helps you plan your hours, evaluate job offers and avoid unexpected changes to your benefits.

Allsup Employment Services (AES) is an Employment Network that helps you understand how SGA applies to your situation. You receive guidance that connects your income with your SSDI and Medicare so you can work with greater confidence.

If you’re thinking about returning to work but worry about what happens if you can’t continue, the Ticket To Work Program provides a safety net—Expedited Reinstatement (EXR).

If you become unable to work due to your disability within five years after your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) ends, you can request to have your benefits reinstated. You won’t have to file a new application while the SSA reviews your medical condition to make sure you still meet the SSDI requirements.

At Allsup Employment Services (AES), we help you understand how EXR works and guide you through the process so you can have peace of mind as you transition back to work.

We’re here to help you take that first step back into the workforce with confidence, knowing that your SSDI benefits are protected if you need them.

When is a good time to slow down on making timely progress?

Answer: NEVER.

If you’re working hard to return to work with a disability, don’t let the recent government shutdown talk slow you down. While the government may slow down on some things temporarily, here’s what doesn’t change:

- You have a job search—or new position—to maintain.
- Your work incentives like Trial Work Period are still in place to give you the room to perform.
- Your benefits are still protected when using the Ticket To Work Program.

You’re also an extra step ahead with help from Allsup Employment Services, providing vocational services and assistance in managing your Ticket.

AES helps you use the Social Security Administration’s Ticket To Work Program by:
- Assisting you with SSA communication.
- Assisting you with completing your Individual Work Plan.
- Providing career exploration, assistance and support.

02/05/2026

When you are working while receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), reporting your wages is one of the most important ways to avoid owing overpayments and protect your benefits.

Each paycheck you earn helps the Social Security Administration (SSA) understand how your work fits within the Ticket To Work (TTW) Program and work incentives like the Trial Work Period and Extended Period of Eligibility.

When your earnings are reported accurately and on time, SSA can apply the right rules to your case, so you keep your benefits and Medicare while you work.

If you live with a disability, you already balance your health, your job and your finances. Tracking and reporting earnings can feel overwhelming.

This is where Allsup Employment Services (AES), an SSA-authorized Employment Network, can provide strong support. While you remain the one responsible for reporting earnings to the SSA, we help you understand what, when and how to report. We also help you understand how your earnings affect your SSDI and Medicare so you can avoid benefit issues later.

Working while protecting your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) starts with understanding the Trial Work Period (TWP).

The TWP is one of the most important work incentives in the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Ticket To Work (TTW) Program because it gives you a way to test working without putting your SSDI benefits at immediate risk.

During your TWP, SSA allows you to test your ability to work for up to nine non-consecutive months, plus a three-month grace period, while still receiving your full benefits regardless of earnings amount.

A TWP month is counted when your earnings go over a set amount, called Substantial Gainful Activity, which SSA updates each year.

Knowing what counts as work and when your TWP begins helps you make informed decisions about accepting a job, increasing hours or taking on new responsibilities.

Allsup Employment Services (AES) can help you track your TWP and understand how your work fits within the TTW Program. You receive clear guidance so your return to work stays aligned with SSA rules.
