The Power of Choices: Supporting Toddlers Through Big Feelings

Toddlers are in a stage where they are learning independence, but their skills are still developing.

When they feel out of control, meltdowns can happen as a way to express that overwhelm.

Offering simple, appropriate choices can make a big difference in these moments.

Choices help children feel a sense of control over their environment.

This reduces power struggles because the child feels heard and respected.

Instead of saying “put your shoes on,” try offering, “Do you want the red shoes or the blue shoes?”

This small shift invites cooperation rather than resistance.

When children feel included in decision-making, they are more likely to engage positively.

Choices also build confidence and independence over time.

They begin to learn how to make decisions and trust their own abilities.

Even in moments of frustration, offering limited choices can help redirect the energy in a calm way.

Empowering your child with choices supports emotional regulation and strengthens your connection.
