Created for good, with a capacity for harm.

Somewhere in a factory, this single match was created with the “intent” or purpose of providing good in this world. Its multifaceted usefulness can be a resource for light, heat, cooking, and protection. When cared for responsibly, its goodness is rich, invaluable, and necessary for thriving. However, when a single match is not cared for, it holds a harmful capacity for destruction. Miles upon miles of forest lands have been burned to the ground because of a single match. Analogous to a match, humans must also take responsibility tor both our profound goodness and our capacity for harm. Many of us, were not provided with the necessary nurturing, care, and attunement needed to thrive. We were burned emotionally and sometimes physically too. This often keeps us stuck in survival mode. Unlike the charred remains left in the wake of a deadly forest fire, the scars and wounds of hurt, harm, neglect, and abuse are often unseen and easy to hide. Unfortunately, when we have been burned relationally, it’s also easy for us to burn others and perpetuate the toxic cycle of trauma and harm. This can stir a lot of shame and guilt and ultimately prevent us from getting the support we need to both heal and make amends. Healing is a necessary step for thriving and you don’t have to do the work alone. If you’ve been burned, we believe you, and we know how to help. You deserve healing, growth, and change—you deserve to thrive!

In our therapeutic work, it often seems this is the hardest mountain for many clients to climb. We live in a culture that constantly reminds us, both explicitly and implicitly, that we are not good enough. When this reality intersects our stories of hurt, harm, abuse, and neglect, layers upon layers of trauma accumulate. When this happens, toxic shame often becomes the loudest, most powerful voice in our life. We fall victim to an insidious and deceptive belief that the core of who we truly are, is bad.

At Grey Sky Counseling, part of our mission is to help encourage you to take ownership and responsibility for your profound goodness. We believe you are worth fighting for and deserve to flip-the-script of toxic shame. Can you imagine what your life would look like when your core identity is rooted in goodness, possibility, and freedom? This is a mountain that you CAN conquer and you don’t have to climb alone.

“It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.” -Aristotle

When we face the grey skies of life, we must fight hard to find and see the light. Light has a funny way of showing up in many forms, sometimes it is a literal light breaking through the clouds, and sometimes it comes in the form of life-giving relationships. During dark moments, where do you experience light?

If feelings illuminate needs, and needs require action, what keeps us from actually taking appropriate action? While a complex question like this can yield a plethora of answers, it’s hard to deny the role fear and shame play in our “stuckness” and the struggle we have to take healthy action. In an episode of the podcast Unlocking Us, Brene interviews the brilliant . The episode (link in Bio) is profoundly powerful and discusses the intersection of body shame, radical self-love, and social justice. SRT exposes the system, “a ladder” that perpetuates the hate we have for our own bodies and the bodies of others, which ultimately and deceptively determines how we are never ever good enough. We consciously and unconsciously climb this ladder. It is “appears” to be sturdy, immovable, and woven into the very fabric of American culture. However, radical self/other-love is the powerful antidote necessary to tearing down toxic systems that keep us from thriving as individuals, families, communities, and countries. What stands in the way of you offering radical self-love to yourself? Are you prepared to do something to dismantle the ladder of shame? Let’s take action together!

Fear illuminates our need for safety. Creating safety doesn’t mean that we rid the world of all risk, danger, and/or threat. Because threats have always been part of the human experience, our brains are hardwired to feel fear (a protective emotion) in order to keep us safe. If we fail to acknowledge the reality of dangerous circumstances, situations, and/or people, we set ourselves up for profound harm—physically and emotionally. However, when we honor our fear (real or perceived)and ask ourselves what we actually need to feel safe, we can begin to take the necessary steps to confront our fears, both great and small. Yes, finding the summit of our mountains can be an exhilarating and rewarding experience. However, life (much like mountaineering) requires us to courageously navigate hazardous and terrifying terrain much like the crevasse crossing pictured here. With proper training, reliable outfitting, and a trustworthy guide/team, you can face and overcome the mountains of life—encouraged, equipped, and empowered.

A core value of our therapeutic approach centers particularly on the function of emotions. Analogous to a dash light on a vehicle, the purpose of an emotion is to “illuminate” needs. IWhen we fail to appropriately identify what we are feeling, unfortunately the corresponding need(s) goes unmet. This keeps us stuck in survival mode. Our emotionally focused approach helps equip clients with the necessary skills and tools to begin identifying their feelings, determine the corresponding needs, and how to advocate for those needs in emotionally healthy ways. Thriving becomes possible when we learn to honor our feelings and our needs.

Grey skies are here. This time of the year can be a hard transition for many and it’s critical to remember the importance of self-care. Deep breaths, yoga, a bubble bath, a warm beverage, painting, journaling and even a long hike (the trails are still open 😀)! These are but a few of our favorite ways to fight against the real effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). And yes, the shifting season and weather patterns can have an impact on both our physical and mental health. However, it’s important to know when our sadness is revealing much more than a severe lack of vitamin D. Sadness doesn’t have to be a “bad/negative” emotion to avoid. While it can sometimes be overwhelming to feel, our sadness is trying to communicate something important to us. It’s an invitation to grieve, to acknowledge and honor loss. When we fail to tell the truth about loss and grief, it can have a devastating impact on our lives. If you or one of your VIP’s are having a hard time navigating any type of sadness, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help, you don’t have to climb alone.

This morning we read a story of a climber who was on the mountain alone and experienced the terror of, “the snow completely gave way, no warning, just gone.” The climber was soon dangling on the edge of a crevasse, alone, and fighting hard to get to safety. Fortunately, they were able to safely get out of danger and back home safely. Unfortunately, stories do not always end this way. Therapeutically, we hear stories like this every day. Life, like climbing a mountain, can be both exhilarating and dangerous. We often buy into a belief that we must suffer in silence, do it on our own, and not ask for help. However, at Grey Sky Counseling, we believe you don’t have to climb alone.

Our Story

Mission: Grey Sky Counseling Co. is dedicated to encouraging, equipping, and empowering our clients as they navigate the difficult terrain of relational turmoil, emotional pain, and surviving the devastating impact of a traumatic past. When faced with the mountains of life, it can be a daunting task to find our way to the top. You do not have to climb alone.

Approach: By embracing a relational psychodynamic model, we are convinced that the journey towards thriving is accomplished in the context of healthy relationships. Our therapeutic approach is grounded in a unique blend of psychodynamic, emotionally focused, attachment, systems, existential, interpersonal, experiential, and psychoanalytic theories while also integrating the use of analogy, metaphor, and simile informed by mountaineering and backcountry exploration. By placing a large emphasis on what happens in the "here-and-now" of the therapeutic relationship, our collaborative work with clients explore the ways in which the past tends to live on in the present and ultimately impedes healthy healing, growth, and change.
