Insurance companies have been using antiquated and outdated criteria from 1991 to determine who is eligible for life changing and life saving Bariatric surgery. In fact if you actually go on the NIH website and look up the 1991 consensus it actually says some if not all the data used is outdated and/or outright WRONG! Yet the insurance companies have been using this for over 30 years! There’s has been an avalanche of data to support the safety and efficacy of Bariatric surgery. And a lot of hard work and data driven thought was put into the new guidelines published by and . Hopefully this is the beginning of real change so more people have access to better health. 🤝🤞

Two groups of bariatric surgeons want to expand eligibility for weight loss surgery. Whether insurance companies will agree remains to be seen.

➡️Food: I followed your instructions. I weigh everything. I don’t tell myself “I can’t”. Instead, I meal prep and plan and eat with purpose. If I want something I’ll plan for it.
➡️Inspiration: I have found some good Instagram accounts run by bariatric dietitians. I’m a visual learner so “seeing” helps me tremendously.
➡️Genetics: I lean towards the Italian genetics in my family line
➡️Positivity: I try to surround myself with positive energy and filter out negatively and darkness as best I can. I’m endlessly optimistic.
I try to make my home a haven: I need a place where I can refill what’s been spent during the day. Balance.
➡️Goals: I enjoy having something to work towards.
I’m a work in progress and I’m enjoying my transformation journey and sculpting my new me. Mentally and physically.

One of my patients gave me this cool photo for my office. She had an Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) three months ago. Prior to the ESG she weighed 190 pounds with a BMI of 32. And I just saw her for her three month visit and she has lost 40 pounds so far! She lost 100% of her excess body weight👏 And, she just got back from a scuba diving trip in Hawaii and talked about how everything was so much easier and more fun with the weight loss.

Interesting back story as her husband had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy with me and has absolutely crushed it🔥. He lost 120 pounds and has maintained his weight loss for over 4 years. So she was eating similarly to him and exercising but could not lose weight. But the ESG was the key to unlocking her weight loss!

The Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is an incisionless outpatient procedure. Using a suturing device that attaches to the end of the gastroscope, the stomach is sutured from the inside of the stomach. This reduces the volume of the stomach but more importantly delays gastric emptying which allows patients to feel full sooner and longer. And the risks are even lower than the vertical sleeve gastrectomy which is already low to begin with. Recovery is quicker and patients usually get back to their daily activities within a day.
