🚨 Planning to Leave Safely — Don’t Forget Your Pets 🐾
Leaving an abusive situation is already overwhelming… and for many survivors, the fear of what happens to their pets can keep them trapped.
If you’re planning to leave, your safety matters — and so does theirs.
Here are practical steps to include your pets in a safe exit plan:
Have a Safe Way to Transport Them
A carrier, crate, or leash isn’t just about control — it’s about moving quickly and safely without drawing attention or risking escape during a high-stress moment.
Plan Your Stops Carefully (or Avoid Them)
If you have to travel a distance, map out safe, discreet stops ahead of time — or plan to go straight to your destination if possible.
Never Leave Them Behind in a Vehicle
In a crisis situation, things can change fast. Keep your pet with you at all times — separation can create risk for both of you.
Update ID Tags & Microchip Info
If you can do this safely beforehand, make sure your contact info is current. If not, bring documentation so you can update it as soon as you’re in a safe place.
Pack a “Go Bag” for Your Pet
Include food, water, medications, vaccination records, a leash, and a comfort item. Think of this just like your own emergency bag.
💜 You deserve to leave safely — and you don’t have to leave them behind.
Many shelters and programs now offer pet-safe accommodations or partner with foster networks to protect animals while survivors get to safety.
