🚨 Planning to Leave Safely — Don’t Forget Your Pets 🐾

Leaving an abusive situation is already overwhelming… and for many survivors, the fear of what happens to their pets can keep them trapped.

If you’re planning to leave, your safety matters — and so does theirs.

Here are practical steps to include your pets in a safe exit plan:

Have a Safe Way to Transport Them
A carrier, crate, or leash isn’t just about control — it’s about moving quickly and safely without drawing attention or risking escape during a high-stress moment.
Plan Your Stops Carefully (or Avoid Them)
If you have to travel a distance, map out safe, discreet stops ahead of time — or plan to go straight to your destination if possible.
Never Leave Them Behind in a Vehicle
In a crisis situation, things can change fast. Keep your pet with you at all times — separation can create risk for both of you.
Update ID Tags & Microchip Info
If you can do this safely beforehand, make sure your contact info is current. If not, bring documentation so you can update it as soon as you’re in a safe place.
Pack a “Go Bag” for Your Pet
Include food, water, medications, vaccination records, a leash, and a comfort item. Think of this just like your own emergency bag.

💜 You deserve to leave safely — and you don’t have to leave them behind.

Many shelters and programs now offer pet-safe accommodations or partner with foster networks to protect animals while survivors get to safety.

Living with anxiety is constantly negotiating with your brain:
“You’re safe.”
“Am I though?”
“Yes.”
“But what if—”
It’s exhausting.
Here are some Affirmations for those anxious times

Recantation occurs in about 80% of domestic violence criminal cases.

It makes sense: Victims of domestic violence have an intimate relationship that is often spousal, romantic, sexual, parental, social, psychological, and/or financial with the offender. In many cases, victims want the abuse to stop or their abuser to be taken for the night, but not necessarily arrested and prosecuted.

Recantation might look like:
➜ Minimizing the incident
➜ Denying it happened
➜ Faulting him or herself
➜ Refusing to participate in prosecution

For many victims, recantation can feel like the safest and most prudent course of action.

Many of us believe that being hard on ourselves is what keeps us motivated. But research shows the opposite — self-criticism causes anxiety and undermines our confidence, while self-compassion helps us to stay resilient and keep going after setbacks.

When we replace our inner critic with an encouraging, supportive inner coach, we don’t lose our drive — we strengthen it.

In this month’s blog, I share how self-compassion fuels motivation and guide you through the Motivating Self-Compassion Break — a short practice to help you turn harsh self-talk into supportive energy for growth and action.
