A mini treasure hunt is an effective tool for building receptive language. This activity requires children to listen carefully, process directions, and articulate their reasoning.

Implementation Tips:

✅ Keep Clues Concrete: Start with simple locations (e.g., "under something soft").
✅ Facilitate Reasoning: Ask "Why did you look there?" to help them vocalize their thought process.
✅ Scale Complexity: Increase clue difficulty as your child's confidence grows.

Which of these strategies do you use most often? Let us know in the comments.

Is Your Child’s “Why?” the Secret to Their Success? 🔍

From reaching for a shiny toy to the endless "why" phase, curiosity is how children learn to navigate their world. At SmallTalk, we see curiosity as the engine behind language, problem-solving, and confidence.

When kids wonder and explore, they aren’t just having fun, they are building the brain power needed to communicate their thoughts and understand others.

In our latest blog post, we explore:

1️⃣ Why Curiosity Matters: How "wondering" strengthens memory and reasoning.
2️⃣ 4 Simple Strategies: Easy ways to turn everyday routines into discovery moments.
3️⃣ Playful Activities: Three quick ideas, like the "Mystery Bag," that you can try at home today.

Curiosity turns learning into an adventure. Let’s help your child turn their "whys" into words!

Family changes like moving, a new sibling, or starting school can shake up a child’s world and that includes how they communicate. It’s common for kids to talk less, get frustrated, or lean on old habits during big transitions.

This blog breaks down why these changes happen and how you can help your child feel heard, supported, and safe during times of change.

Sound substitutions are a normal part of speech development, especially in toddlers and preschoolers.

However, when these patterns extend into the early school years, they could signal the need for speech-language support. Our team helps families understand what’s expected at each stage and how to support clear communication.
