Kindering

Kindering Kindering provides early support services to infants and children who have special needs and their families.

Kindering embraces children of diverse abilities and their families by providing the finest education and therapies to nurture hope, courage, and the skills to soar. Founded in 1962 by five young Eastside mothers of children with special needs, Kindering is the largest early support center in Washington State, one of the three largest centers in the nation, and notably the most comprehensive. Each year thousands of infants and children with special needs receive crucial therapies, special education, and other early support programming designed to give them the tools they need to reach developmental milestones. We also offer a full range of services to support the entire family, including parent education courses, specialized support groups for parents (Mothers Circle, Fathers Network) and siblings (Sibshops), specialized programming for foster parents, and a true sense of community for those facing the unexpected journey of raising a child with special needs. Specialties

Developmental assessments; physical, occupational, speech, nutrition/feeding, and mental health therapies; special education; parent and sibling support groups; parent education; family counseling; specialized support for children in foster care and their families; private therapy; and an inclusive toddler preschool. The Need Is Great

Kindering is now serving more children than ever before, and demand for our services is growing. Over the last five years, enrollment in our early support program has more than doubled. Infants cannot wait: research proves that birth to three years of age is a critical period for development. Early support can change a child's life, and you can help Kindering ensure that no child in need is ever turned away from receiving the support they need to develop to their fullest potential.

We're grateful to the advocates AND legislators who have fought to oppose cuts to Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) services for kids with disabilities this Legislative Session. We were especially grateful to see neither the House nor Senate budgets include cuts, as this piece by notes. And, we'll continue advocating to preserve these critical services until the Legislative Session ends on March 12th!

Shout out to for being an amazing parent advocate!

Watch here:

Anxiety is swirling among several advocacy groups as the state budget is debated and cuts are on the line.

02/24/2026

While the legislative session is far from over, we are grateful to have a solid reason for hope that the state will not cut Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) services: neither the House nor Senate budget includes ESIT reductions.

Thank you to everyone who is continuing to advocate alongside us, AND to the legislators who are standing up for these critical services.

Tonight, we especially want to shout out Kindering parents Julia Anderson and Gina Parziale, who each shared powerful testimony in House and Senate budget hearings. Your stories are a moving reminder of what these services mean to kids and families. 💜

"In King County, this means about 1,200 fewer children would have access to state-funded services to help them develop vital communication, motor, and basic survival skills (including eating)."

And for Kindering, this means losing $2.42 million in funding under the state’s proposal, putting services at risk for more than 400 children.

Toddler Quinn started speech therapy through the Early Supports for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) program when she was 2-year-old. She wasn't really talking before and her mom Reilly said, “I got really intense about sign language, because when you can’t communicate with your kid and they’re really struggling and frustrated, it’s awful.” Now, after speech therapies, Quinn is speaking words and even communicating in short sentences!

The proposal [HB 2688] “is saving a dollar today to spend $5 tomorrow,” Rep. Joshua Penner, R-Orting, said during a budget hearing Feb. 7.

"The cuts to research-proven early childhood interventions in HB 2688 will undoubtedly guarantee higher costs and worse outcomes for years to come. For a significant portion of children with developmental delays, these early investments will mean they no longer require special education services or lifelong support."

Did you know 85% of brain growth happens in the first 3 years of a child's life? Ensuring we give our youngest and most vulnerable Washingtonians the best supports during this critical window can be life-changing!

When we start talking about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, we must first remember that we are also talking about families. In Washington state, 80% of people with developmental disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, or Down syndrome live with or are cared for by a fam...

At the House Appropriations Committee Hearing in Olympia yesterday, parents, providers, county leaders, and others spoke up for Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) -- and against HB 2688.

This bill would likely cut ESIT out of future multiplier rate increases, destabilizing an already fragile system on which infants and toddlers with disabilities rely.

We are deeply thankful to every advocate who signed in and/or testified against this bill. And special thanks to Kindering parent Stephanie Walsh for closing out our panel!
