Stimulation of the nipple–areola activates nerve endings. These nerves send signals to the hypothalamus, which prompts the posterior pituitary to release oxytocin.
Oxytocin is the same hormone used medically as Pitocin.

Oxytocin causes uterine contractions. Oxytocin binds to receptors in the uterine muscle. The uterus has more oxytocin receptors, making it more responsive. This leads to rhythmic contractions that can help start or strengthen labor.
